gf looking for new car

so, gf is thinking about getting rid of her '08 Miata for something more "practical" ()
we've got two full size dogs and can't go on trips as she insists that they can't ride in a cage in the back of the truck as it's not safe, as well as the fact that she thinks it's necessary for us to be able to take other people with us if we need to
i, of course, feel that she's being extremely silly about this, but it's her car so i'm trying to help her with what she wants, so whatever

it's an '08, manual, soft top, with about 45K on the clock, needs tires and a couple other little things which i'm not sure fixing those will improve the cost or not (neither of us have ever traded a car in before, so there's a lot we don't really know)

she likes Mazda and basically thinks that the CX7 is cute, and looks functional, but beyond that has no real preference for vehicles, i'm wondering what the other options in a sort of wagony type car/crossover would be
all of her cars have been manual transmissions, so i think that's something she'd want

she's looking for a straight trade, and is one of those people that are almost jew-like in their ability to haggle and deal, and the big one is that she has no problem walking away from any deal she doesn't like because she doesn't NEED to trade the car in, she's just interested in looking at options

sooooo... what are the options?

It's the worst part of the year to offload a convertible (unless you live somewhere warm).... If you can wait till late spring, you'll make an extra grand or more IMHO. I'm sure a dealer will rape you extra hard on the trade in for this reason as well.

As far as a car, has she considered subarus? The forester is a good little crossover, carries 5 people plus 2 dogs, and comes with stick shift, which many of the other small suv's ignore.

She could also go for a wagon or hatch... The Mazda3 5 door would make her feel right at home...

No pics.
Also, we live in Tampa, Fl. Right now the weather is perfect for a convertible.

Price range? A 2010 Chevy Equinox would work for both dogs and passengers...the dogs could ride behind the rear seats (which can slide forward 8" if the dogs need more room) and still leave leg room for passengers. No manual option though..

She thinks putting the dogs in a kennel in the back of a truck is not safe, but having them loose on the inside of a car with you is?

she thinks the Equinox is too manly (as well as the fact that i'm not a Chevy guy), same with the Escape

any comments on the fixing the tires and whatnot? will that affect trade-in value?

as for price, like i said she wants to do a straight trade, so part of that is going to be what sort of deal she can do, and how much the Miata is worth in this condition

don't ask me, i don't get it, i don't agree with it, i think her reasoning on trading it in is fucking silly as hell (especially since it appears that she wants the CX7 simply on the basis that it's cute, no test drive, nothing else), but its something she wants to do so i'm trying to help where i can

I don't think she's going to be able to trade an '08 Miata in for a brand new CX-7 without having to pay some.

It's probably about the right size for what she needs, though, with two large dogs.

Edit: You're going to take it in the ass if you actually trade in a Miata right now. You'll be better off selling the Miata to a private party (craigslist?), and then use the cash from the sale as a down payment on whatever else she wants.
