Need help finding a tiny knife for college.

Hey guys. There are times when a blade would come in very handy while at school, like cutting non-perforated pages out of a lab book, opening things, etc. I also just feel more comfortable having a cutting device on me at all times. The problem lies with strict school policies and while I doubt most professors would give a damn about a small blade, I would rather be safe than sorry. I've read the school rules and the california laws but they're fairly vague and overencompassing.

So I was considering either the Gerber Clutch mini multitool
http://www.gerbergear.com/index.php/product/id/97

or the Gerber Artifact tool
http://www.gerbergear.com/index.php/product/id/325

Both are inexpensive and pretty small, but I'm still concerned about overzealous knife-nazis and certainly don't want any trouble. The artifact has a nice short exacto blade, but actually looks pretty long when fully open; while the clutch has pliers which I love, but also a blade nearing two inches.

What do you guys think? I appreciate your opinions. Is there a better knife out there for me? I don't neccessarily need it to be a multitool, just a knife which no one could consider a weapon.

Thanks.

Would a tiny ( it sounded like you consider 2" too long ) blade be all that useful for self defense anyway?

I don't want it for self defense, just for utility. I agree such a small blade wouldn't be useful for self defense, but I'm still worried someone at school may consider it a weapon.

it might help if you posted the school rules and possibly the state laws

edit: if you're absolutely concerned with it, get a razor knife like this
http://www.freeafterrebate.info/deal...-utility-knife

the blade on those is about one inch long, so i doubt anyone would ever be able to bitch about it

"Possession, while on a college campus or at a college-sponsored function, of any of the following weapons (this provision does not apply to persons given permission by the college president or his designated representatives or members of law enforcement agencies such as police officers): any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as blackjack, sling shot, fire bomb, billy club, sandclub, sandbag, metal knuckles; and dirk, dagger, firearm (such as pistol, revolver, rifle, etc.) loaded or unloaded; any knife, switchblade; any razor with an unguarded blade; any metal pipe or bar which could be used as a club; or any item such as a chain, which could by used to threaten bodily harm. "

From my schools webpage, specifically the "any knife" part. Sounds like they're covering their asses by using such a blanket term. So I just want something I can cut with that no one would ever consider was a weapon, and if claimed by someone that it was, would be laughed at by everyone else. A blade under an inch long would be best, expecially if the whole deal was under 2 inches long. Maybe something I could hook on my keyring.

it sounds like you're boned if you try to follow the rules
and for the most part, any knife i've ever seen that's small enough to fit on a key-ring is useless, the steel is horrible, they're cheaply made

i'm not saying that you should break the rules, but...

i used to used to use "safety" utility knives at a warehouse job years ago

they were standard Stanley self-retracting utility knives fitted with a rounded blade instead of the normal pointed utility blade

very useful for cutting boxes, rope, etc., but nearly impossible to use as a weapon unless your victim was just standing there letting you cut them

something like this:
http://www.labsafety.com/store/item/33926/

with this blade:

another name would be a carpet knife

i saw nothing in the rules about an axe...

so you should just start carrying an axe around and see what you can get stirred up, make sure you carry around a copy of the rules too

I'm pretty sure any metal pipe or bar long enough to stick out of your hand can be used as a club, haha. And you can threaten bodily harm with just about anything

hell yeah,

i used to keep a 2.5' long stick of schedule 80 plastic pipe in my truck in HS (there were some instances over the yers where some s would jump people in town). I never had to use it, but i took it one day and decided to see how much it would take to break it. After about 30 minutes of hitting trees, concrete, steel, anything else, all it had was a couple scratches on it.

One day i got bored and filled up the end 6" of it with some concrete for two reasons. A - made the end a whole lot more dense, thus making the impact a whole lot worse. And B - It changed the balance on it, and it felt like it helped me swing it a whole lot faster.

The i added some grip tape, and voila. I had the ultimate OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG nocker

I used therse for years, and from what you were saying it looks to fill all the boxes. I dunno about its legality, the exposed blade part is maybe an inch long.

I carried a Kershaw Leek and a Benchmade 710 every day on campus at our local college. As long and you aren't a total retard, nobody really cares. Just be very aware of your surroundings and use it in a very professional and responsible manner and you won't have any problems. Of course, you can still encounter some rule nazi that totally buries you and you have no way out because of the way that the school has covered their ass legally.
