Help getting rid of these corrupt icons...

Can't seem to delete these icons, when I try to I get a dialog box saying "Cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk" or something of that nature. Tried renaming them and delete, overwriting them with the same name files, using dosprompt and still no go.

kinda sounds like a virus.
check those files with a virus scanner and see if it can delete them if it detects them as a virus.

in dos, you should be able to delete the files.
copy/paste a DIR of your desktop so we can see the files.
list with the 8.3 format too. you might have better luck deleting the files that way.

Not a virus, I have Symantec Antivirus Corp installed and latest definitions. I got those corrupt icons after my laptop bluescreened.

8 File(s) 4,678 bytes
2 Dir(s) 5,834,711,040 bytes free

This is from command prompt. I also tried deleting everything in the directory with the "del *.*" command and it didn't work either.

well the problem is that the file names have weird ASCII characters in them.
is your drive NTFS or FAT32 formatted?
if FAT32, boot up a knoppix or other live linux distro, and delete them from there.

run chkdsk, schedule it, and reboot to do it while the volume is unmounted.

Sounds like your filesystem got screwed up, perhaps.

I figured as much, I'm downloading Knoppix right now. I've never used Linux before, does this distro come with a GUI so I can cruise through and delete the troublesome files with ease?

Tried Knoppix and had no luck deleting the files from there, also tried jkoebel's method with no luck as well. I wouldn't really care if the damn files weren't stuck on my desktop

Finally got rid of the files through Knoppix, I wasn't aware I had to change the read/write mode of the partition in order to change things. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys.

I've had that problem before. I booted to a Win98SE floppy, went into dos and deleted from there.
