How much speed do I need?

I'm finally going to abandon the ranks of dial-up home Internet users and go with DSL, because I plan to start working from home soon, and they require high speed Internet access. It will involve downloading sound files of dictation and transcribing at home. The local service provider offers 256/256 for $24.95 a month and 1.5/256 for $38.95. This is the first time I've actually inquired about this, so I'm just posting the numbers the rep gave me.

My question is would the first option be fast enough for what I need to do, and would it be worth the extra money every month? I don't mind waiting a little for the files to download, but I don't want to wait very long. I'm leaning towards paying the extra and having the higher speed.

256/256 will give you speeds of something like 30KB/s down.

1.5/256 will give you something in the region of 180KB/s down.

personally I'd go with the faster, more expensive option, as having to put up with speeds of 256/256 would just about kill me, but then I'm a heavy downloader.

Basically if I were you I'd work out the average size of files you download and work out how long it would take to download that file on each of the different plans, and then decide whether you can put up with the slower one or if the faster option would make more sense.

256 kbps is enough to stream a high quality mp3, and it's probably enough for your work. Still, I'd go wtih the faster option.

Speed is good, but if you get the fast stuff and have to downgrade, you'll kick yourself in the ass.

the telco is probably going to want you in a contract. if this is the case i'd start slow and upgrade, which they'll allow, rather than have to ride out a year at high speed even if you discover you don't need it.

also, dictation/speech can be understood at suprisingly low bitrates, making for small files. assuming the person doing the encoding knows this and doesn't encode at cd quality you could end up having very light needs.

i would check out how they plan on transferring the audio... as they may be stupid and not compress them, meaning you will want the fastest you can get.

Not here in Nowhereville, USA. It's a pretty rural area, and I consider myself fortunate that any high speed options are available here.

Get the faster one. I'm on 4000/768ish and it's about right. Any slower and I would be suffering

(I was on dial-up for 7 years, I feel your pain!)
