Home: Unclog Disposal v. Shot Glass...

Shot glass went down my disposal and now it won't work. I got the big pieces, but I guess the little pieces are still in there. When I flip the switch the motor runs, there is electricity flowing, but no movement or other noise.

How can I fix?

Thanks.

lol

theres already been a thread about this. You have to flip the override (usually a red button), and manually turn it until clear with an allen wrench.

If the motor runs there isn't a problem.

Do you mean it makes a noise and binds? A disposal should be able to mince some glass shards down to nothing eventually, just run plenty of cold water and give it something to help, like a buncha coffee grinds.

If it's binding, use that reverse switch first.

Had this happen in mine, there is an allen head screw which you turn by hand. The power must be off obviously and you turn it in the direction the motor should spin. Don't be afraid to give it some torque if needed.

Then try & turn it back on to see if it spins freely, if not repeat. Make sure the water is running obviously.

I always wondered about garbage disposals so I just read the whole wiki. It sounds like an awesome kitchen accessory.

I know its off topic, but in what situations do you use it?
Can I toss banana peels and rinds from other fruits into it?
Is it on anytime the water is running or only when you need to dispose of solid food waste?

Wiki also says "Never feed glass into a garbage disposal.".

Just about any food item is ok(not bones though, unless the manufacture specifically says bones are ok).

The garbage disposal only needs to run when food is being feed down the drain.

Ya beats filling up the trash.

gotta be careful if you have a septic system though. Then there are more limitation about what you want to be putting down your pipes.

No septic, I live in civilization

---------

So its 200 bucks for an insinkerator which I think is really reasonable.

Gimme some scenarios where during a normal week a disposal comes in handy.

I use my garbage disposal every single day.

It chops up food and things that might otherwise clog up your drain....

Spend a bit for a high-power unit and you can put just about any fruit/vegetable peel in it. Some of them can even take poultry bones.

remember to run it with cold water. Most use the water to cool it so hot water will prematurely kill the motor.

Yes & no...

Yes if you run it for 3 hours with hot water, no if you use the hot water for like 3 mins.

I prefer to split it using lukewarm because cold water doesn't really dissolve some things well.
