Sennheiser 280 Pro's are like wall hacking.... I use to get accused of cheating all the time in games because I could actually hear the footsteps across the map.

If they had a mic I'd be all over them, I really don't want to have to get a mic separately though.

I have a pair of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-Ga.../dp/B003NVMDYY

Very sturdy, very dependable, decent audio+mic quality, and they have huge over-ear cups. I'd definitely recommend them. Only complaint is that once in a blue moon the stupid mic mute switch just "magically" gets flipped on and I always end up scrambling swapping cords around trying different usb ports then... oh... DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR mic is muted.

Headphones really have not gotten 'better' - all the research in the area has been done and little exists in terms of better materials - neo magnets perhaps, but that's about it.

Wear and tear should lead your list of reasons if you have few complaints about your old ones, or maybe if you want the attached mic. Personally I hate anything on my head - i use speakers and a table mic.

This is true, they sound so crisp just spend 75-80 on the 280s and buy an external mic. That's what I did and I can hear everyone crisp and clear and they can hear me clear. (and I have a loud computer)

I'm in this same boat but I'm coming from a pair of Razer Barracuda's. I got a few selections I'm heavily considering. I'm also really keen on a headset, not jst headphones. Sure HD-280 Pro's are nice but I don't want a separate microphone. I listen to a lot of various music, do some minor guitar recording, I game a shitload, and I LAN a lot.

For reference, the Barracudas
http://store.razerzone.com/store/raz...oryId.40826100

The very first pair my brother linked me was the Corsair 1500's, which seem like a logic choice based on specs and the fact that Corsair is notorious for making really nice products in many different areas.

The pair that originally caught my attention was the Razer Banshee. These seem really nice and they're only 90$ on Newegg. One thing I'm curious about is going from a headset that has 4 speakers in it to a headset that has 1 single 50mm driver. Not sure if I would get blasted away or what. I like the lights a lot too, lol. One thing that bugs me is the microphone is detachable, and with a mic that fucking big on the side it seems like it would fall out a lot. The mic on the Barracudas is tiny but detachable and over time it would fall out if I got too rowdy.

Razer Megalodons. I think these might be a heap of shit because why would I want a built-in audio processor? Seems like everything could go wrong.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826153051

The closest thing I have seen to the Barracudas is a pair linked previously. The Turtle Beach Z6A's have the same 5.1 surround sound setup by having multiple speakers in each earphone. The price is right and turtle beach is known for good audio equipment, so these make a great choice as well if you ask me.
http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/...force-z6a.aspx

That's just my take on things right now. My lowend price range is whatever but I wasn't looking to really spend over 130$ for a new headset.

One thing I am unsure about is how a USB headset would be compared to a headset with 3.5mm jacks. I have a sound card and to me it seems like having a USB port for audio in/out would be conflicting with my sound card. I don't want my headset to be using on board sound when there's a perfectly good sound card doing nothing and me in turn having lower quality audio (even if I can't tell, I want the jiggabytes to be there!). Anyone know more about this?

It's also quite annoying to have to right click set default device every time I use my headphones (or even foober, set output device .. since windows doesnt change that)
