Some humor for The Pit.

Here's a UPS ad taken from the back cover of the July 1st edition of the "National Review." Thanks go to "Ted Hall" (whoever he is) for leaving it in the lecture hall of my Geology class.

For the slower ones among you, read the UPS slogan, then look at the woman. It just cracked me up the first time I read it.

You don't find the irony funny? They're trying to say that race didn't matter in choosing her, but their slogan is "What can brown do for you?" Oh well, I suppose only some people find this humorous.

Cheeze. My bet is that it takes an interest in social policy. Somehow I found it amusing, as did SamFarber and a couple of other people I showed it to. Oh well, some people are not amused by things like that.

I understand how it could be amusing. It is quite ironic, but irony doesn't always mean funny.

What could be funny, if white people were the "minority" and they had a white person on that page, and it said "What can brown do for you?"

I wouldn't get that one. I suppose the presence or absence of teh funnay in my pic depends on how you look at reverse racism in hiring, hate crimes, etc. Eh, if no one likes it, then oh well.

OK, Agree to disagree. You think the funny is present in your situation, and I think the funny could be present in my situation. Done and Done. I'm out like disco.

maybe because of the fact i've heard UPS' slogan before and understand it made it less funny.
i too see how it could be funny though.

it's funny. of course maybe not to anyone with an I.Q. so low that anything more sophisticated than the three stoodges is contrived elitest garbage.

it's called ironic juxtaposition(clues povided for the short bus enabled below)

iˇronˇic Pronunciation Key (-rnk) also iˇronˇiˇcal (-rn-kl)
adj.

1. Characterized by or constituting irony.
2. Given to the use of irony. See Synonyms at sarcastic.
3. Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended: madness, an ironic fate for such a clear thinker.

juxtaposition

\Jux`ta*po*si"tion\, n. [L. juxta near + positio position: cf. F. juxtaposition. See Just, v. i., and Position.] A placing or being placed in nearness or contiguity, or side by side; as, a juxtaposition of words.

Parts that are united by a a mere juxtaposition. --Glanvill.

I think it's funny because corporations try to come off looking all warm and fuzzy when they put a token black in the spotlight...
