I dont have any pics of my setup but heres the parts list:

ASUS M4A785-M
AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB)
CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX
Logitech diNovo Edge 2
nMEDIAPC Black Aluminum / Acrylic / Steel HTPC 5000B

Running:
Kanotix off of a thumbdrive in live mode.
VLC for playing video and music from a samba share
Spotify for more music
Firefox for the occasional flash video or game

It cost ~$400 (parts and shipping) about 2 years ago. Its held up pretty well, and it has no problem playing anything that I throw at it. I was running xubuntu up until two months ago, but, occasionally, it would stutter when playing 1080p rips. Everything is nice and smooth ever since I switched to Kanotix.

I installed XBMC, MediaPortal and WM7+Media Browser. Also VLC and MPC-HC.
im using XBMC right now since it now works great with spdif. VLC of course works, I use it for avi files with subs.
I open WM7 if i want to watch Netflix that's not on queue when HTPC is already on. TV already has Netflix app so HTPC can be shut off.

Silverstone case for the win.
