Is there some secret special way of removing software from a Mac?

Friend claims he is unable to remove a program called MacFuse, and that this program is preventing him from mounting his new external hard drive.

He says the program is "installed in the library" and "it has no uninstaller."

So genmay, before I go over there and try to my way through it, is there an equivalent of Programs and Features from Win7 for Leopard/Snow Leopard that my friend might not already know about?

Are there any useful apps I could download to assist in removing this program?

How can I uninstall MacFUSE?

A: Launch the Mac OS X System Preferences application and go to the MacFUSE preference pane. Click on the "Remove MacFUSE" button. This will uninstall all MacFUSE components except the preference pane itself.

You can keep the MacFUSE preference pane around should you decide to install MacFUSE again in the future. If you do wish to remove it, you do it just like how you would remove any other non-Apple preference pane: In System Preferences, control-click (right-click) on the MacFUSE icon and you will see "Remove ..." as an action.

Only if you had the "Show Beta Versions" button checked in the MacFUSE prefpane, you'll have a property list (plist) file remaining at this point: /Library/Preferences/com.google.macfuse.plist. To remove it, you should uncheck the button before you remove the prefpane as described above.

Note that an official (correct) MacFUSE installation will have a preference pane if you have MacFUSE 2.0 or later installed. If you have an older version of MacFUSE, you can uninstall as follows.

Deprecated Installation Information

Run the uninstall-macfuse-core.sh script that resides in the Support subdirectory of the MacFUSE file system bundle. The bundle itself resides in /System/Library/Filesystems/ on Mac OS X 10.4.x and in /Library/Filesystems/ on Mac OS X 10.5.x.

For example, to uninstall MacFUSE on Mac OS X 10.4.x, you would run the following command in the Terminal:

Code:
sudo /System/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/uninstall-macfuse-core.sh
To uninstall MacFUSE on Mac OS X 10.5.x and above, you would run:

Code:
sudo /Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/uninstall-macfuse-core.sh
If the file system bundle in your MacFUSE installation doesn't have a Support subdirectory, that means you have an incredibly ancient version of MacFUSE. Please look for the uninstall script within the fusefs.fs/ directory itself.

Weeee friend did something a little boneheaded...

He does this all the time.

When he doesn't like a program, he will search for all instances of that programs' name then delete all files with that name.

So as a solution, I attempted to INSTALL a fresh new copy of Fuse, then tried removing it from the sys preferences panel, it just thinks for a second and says "there are no updates available."

I tried running the sudo command, it does this:
Code:
Last login: Wed Sep 21 22:01:44 on ttys000
mike:~$ sudo /Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/uninstall-macfuse-core.sh
MacFUSE Uninstaller: Can not find the Archive.bom for MacFUSE Core package.
mikes-macbook-7:~
So we're basically fucked now.

Okay so the root of this problem he's having with fuse:

When he tries to mount his external hard drive, which I have confirmed works on my windows PC and apparently also works on his friends Mac...

He gets an error with the title "Tuxera NTFS" then a bunch of scribbledygook about how it was not dismounted properly from Windows, then something at the bottom about MacFuse.

Oh but the other strange thing is that flash drives seem to work fine, mine mounted right up...

could try installing macfuse + ntfs via macports

otherwise do a man find/locate, find all directories containing "fuse," and start rm'ing
