what do you guys know about access and those database things

I use databases all the time at work... but I've never really figured out how they work. my experience with them is that i punch some number or other in and out pops a heap of information.

So now, lets say I have a hypothetical collection of "movies" and I want to be able to sort by genre, location, key actor, penis size, number of awards, date released, quality, etc and would want to create a database on access? Would that be easy to do? What if I were to make it a goal to watch a certain number of genre films in a certain time frame, say they have expiration dates? Is it easy to sort by a 'bring forward' date type system? I can't use a template because these 'movies' arent actually movies, but actual data.

Right now I use an excel spreadsheet. It's a bit tiring to use find and data sort-by-columns when I have so much data. Also I want to build forms to make it easy for giraffes to look up what they want and where they can find it as well.

I checked wikipedia and MS office help and they mentioned that the best thing to use is 'access' as it's a 'relational database'. wikipedia gets all math-like on me which doesn't seem what I'm looking for. I'm not an IT guy and this isn't for profit - I'm just tired of writing notes on post it's and losing them. I've used access before and found it awesome but difficult to manage so many numbers and things going on. I'm going to try and take an online 'intro to access' course and see if it helps but your input on this is greatly appreciated.

If you're not an "IT guy" then Access may be what you want. It's not a great solution for real database work, but for casual use it'll do. My wife learned it in a college class that taught Word, Excel, etc. In fact, she learned enough to create a simple database for her job. Given she's not a techie by any stretch, I'd say that makes Access an accessible database to the lay-person.

That's why I didn't recommend something like that.
