Those of you who have had a Pilonidal Cyst removal...

... share your stories! My "surgery" is on Halloween (haha) - seems like I have a smallish Cyst but I am worried on how they gonna leave it (sutured vs. open healing).

So those of you who have had it - any tips?

Depending on how big it is, be prepared to lay on your side for awhile, and take lots of percocet. I had one removed about a year and a half ago, but it was apparently pretty bad. The part that was cut out ended up being about 2-2/1/2 inches so it was sutured shut. The part that sucks the most are the sutures. When you bend or lay on it they pull and hurt like hell. (Using the bathroom is interesting.... they tell you to take milk of magnesia or something similar to make it easier) I was also instructed to keep the area shaved, so make some good friends quick!
My recovery took about 4 weeks until I could get the sutures removed and go back to work. Even then I still had to go in and have some parts re-sutured.

I had one removed. I don't think they had ever said it was small. I ended up getting 3 stitches.

The cyst and its removal was a never a problem for me. It never hurt, and even though I received 3 stitches they didn't bother me (Though the big giant pad that they give you made poopin' difficult). The general anaesthesia sucked big time. Was nauseous for the rest of the day, didn't have an appetite for two days, and my throat hurt because they have to give you a breathing tube.

After it's removed, you have to keep your butt extra clean for the rest of your life. Don't wear dirty underwear, don't skip showers, sleep nude. I have had it flare up since the surgery due to negligence. Luckily it went back down after a few weeks. Pilonidal cysts are typically caused by genetics, so you're likely to get one again if you're not careful.

Yeah my dad had one as well... I am a pretty clean person - never wear the same underwear twice, shower twice a day... the works.

Breathing tube? You serious? That sucks

Oh also - my doctor today told me that my car's old suspension may have contributed to the cyst developing. Apparently back in WWII, they used to call it the "Jeep Disease" - military jeeps had the stiffest suspension evar and thus caused lots of bumpy rides... as a result a lot of individuals have gotten the cyst. I think my old suspension has definitely played a role.

I had one removed about 9 years ago. Its a humiliating procedure because you kneel ass u on the table, and in my case the nurse was hot, and since I have Italian in me my anus region is hair so I was very uncomfortable. After removl of the abcess they stitch it *open* to heal from the inside out, and you will need to remove and replace the packing, this is painfull and disgusting. The only upside is the pain medicaton is teh win.

Seriously? And increase the odds of ingrown hair...which is like the cause of pilonidal cysts?

You shave it to keep it clean.

I've had the surgery twice. The cyst came back a year after the 1st surgery. The 2nd procedure was a lot more envasive and I have a 3" to 4" scar now. The 1st surgery wasn't that bad; very little amount of pain. Took about an hour for the actual procedure, then I was in the hospital for almost a day for observation. The doctor gave me pills to keep me from going to the bathroom for a couple of days so as not to break the wound open. Then 3 days later he took out most of the packing that was seutered in. Then 10 days later the stitches came out.

The 2nd procedure sucked a lot more because the surgeon ordered me on a catheter for my hospital stay, which fucking sucks, hurt a lot, and was humiliating (having to wait for someone change a bag so you can go to the bathroom). I also had those stupid air cuffs around my ankles to keep blood flowing and to keep from clotting? Makes it pretty difficult to sleep. So I didn't sleep much for that hospital stay.

My cysts were caused by ingrown hairs. It would appear the surgeon didn't remove enough of the area the 1st time around, which is why the cyst reformed. It also became a lot more infected the 2nd time, due to scar tissue and all that junk in there.

I haven't had any flair ups in 3 or 4 yrs since my last surgery. I did have one laser hair removal treatment, which hurt a shitton (like someone snapping a rubber band on your skin x 1000), so I haven't gone back to get the rest of the hair removed. My surgeon suggested that as I seem prone to ingrown hairs. I shave/trim the area about once a month or so (as well as the rest of the manhood) which helps as well, keeping the area dry and clean.

Am I glad I had the procedure done? Hell yes. I could barely sit for more than 30mins before I had the surgeries. I also has nasty blood/puss discharge too, which is all gone now.

These all sound like horror stories. I had one removed and felt very little pain. I only took one painkiller after the surgery, the stitches were a kind that slowly dissolved so they did not have to be manually removed. I just wore incontinence pads for a month or so after the operation then everything was pretty much better. A while after I went in for a second surgery, something like the moved skin from somewhere else to cover where the cyst was and make it harder for the cyst to grow again. Heres what Wikipedia says was done on second surgery "Surgeons can also excise the sinus and repair with a reconstructive flap technique, which is done under general anesthetic. This approach is mainly used for complicated or recurring pilonidal disease, leaves little scar tissue and flattens the region between the buttocks, reducing the risk of recurrence." Haven't had a single problem with it and its been 6 years or so.
