We need to tax sugary foods, fatty foods and fat people.

So it's been shown that excissive amounts of refined sugar and fats can be every bit just as bad for you as tobacco and alcohol, and really given that the diseases from overly sugary and fatty diets are actually causing more of a strain on the healthcare system then tobacco or alchol, then why are sugary and fatty foods not taxed?! Especially if we are going to have one payer health care. Not everyone should just pay a flat amount of tax to pay for everyone elses healthcare. People who have to eat a box of twinkies, drink a liter of pepsi and eat a couple whoppers a week should be paying more tax to the healthcare system because they are more likely to need it.

Also we should just straight up tax fat people. If your over a certain weight, you get a certain multiplier added to your taxes. That'll help the fatties slim down, the culture be healthier as a whole, not put as much strain on the healthcare system and save resources altogether.

Public single-payer system is pretty much the prerequisite for any of these taxes. And we are a looooong way from it.

A lot of people are fat for medical reasons/genetics, not just because they are gluttonous slobs.

Also, a lot of people are not morbidly obese despite what they eat because of genetics.

I don't buy that. Most people who are fat are fat because of a mostly sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary habits.

*some* people are fat for medical reasons. People may have a genetic predisposition to being obese, but they aren't obese despite trying their hardest not to be.

however, the government should i have no right to say what we put in our bodies

if the insurance wants to charge more for people who dont pass health checks, thats fine with me

yea. i dont see how someone can say they are genetically fat, and then eat 4000 fast food calories and sit on the couch all day.

or vice versa, i havnt seen anyone whos fat and also eats a healthy 1250-2000 calories a day

and i know some people cant excercise. my dad for example broke his ankle real bad several years ago, and its practically fused together. he cant run (literally) and any decent amount of time on it will start to hurt it. however, he eats [somewhat] healthy and stays active for what he can (works in the yard, golfs, swims, etc)

It's not a high percentage but they do exist. I just don't like the idea of people thinking they can point at any given fat person and label them a lazy slob.

you ever seen a bearded 6-year old? no? then you don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

vast majority of people claiming they can't stop being fat are obviously fucking lying, owk is right about that. but you can bet your fucking ass that serious starting-at-birth thyroid problems can cause simultaneous muscle dystrophy and obesity. no matter what you eat.

this does not of course cancel out the fact that most people who are fat are fat because they made themselves that way. but not all. endocrine system is a bitch like that.

Agreed, but those are fringe cases that'd be supported by medical tests.

As far as taxing sugary and fatty foods... eh. There are far bigger issues than just sugars and fats, like GMOs, chemical pesticides, etc IMO.

this is true. the only note: those tests tend to be quite expensive. who should pay for them?

i agree. corn subsidies is one big one. also wheat vs rye (way too little rye flour used in the states compared to wheat).

Indeed. If we do start taxing foods that are bad for you we should also have a new "pure foods and drugs act" that improves our food labeling so you know exactly what you are purchasing, what is in it and where it came from.

No more "pink slime" shenanigans.
