Is applying for unemployment a bad thing?

Is it looked down upon to apply for unemployment compensation while looking for a job? I can support myself just fine without it. Some of my friends said it's bad and some say go for it because it's more money in my pockets.

you and your previous employers have paid for it via unemployment insurance over the years. functionally you've earned it.

if I needed it i'd take it. Everyone else works the system, might as well not miss out on it.

If you qualify for it then you earned it through taxes.

I can't see any scenario where it would be bad.

Some people do look down upon it as you have already seen. I don't for the same reason everyone already posted, you paid for it...

Exactly.
I wouldnt tell anyone or talk about it and most people should be smart enough to understand that you are on it.

But to the point. Apply for it. You paid for it.

What these guys said. It's protection that you've paid for if you've held a job.

You've paid into for others via taxes so why shouldn't you being able to get a hand when you need help.

Just like WIC/Foodstamps/Welfare...I fully support the need for a system I just don't support those who use like it is a god given right.
