Noob wants to buy pistol in CA, recommendations?

Ok, I'm sure there are a gajillion of these threads, but here we go.

I'm not new to firearms. I've shot: Musket, 9mm, M-16, Stinger Missile, .50 cal, M240, .45, .50 DE, .40, and so on.

But, I am a noob to civilian firearms. I don't know what to avoid, what to look for, etc. Since I've only shot military arms I'm not knowledgeable enough in civilian arms to make a decision without research. This would most likely be for personal defense in case shit gets really bad here in good old USA.

I have a gun show here in San Diego on Oct. 4 - 5 that I will be going to, but I need advice.

I don't want a .45 because of weight, recoil, and size. I was leaning towards a .40 and I'm looking to spend less than $700. I don't NEED to spend $700, but that is the most I can justify at this time. Are there certain models that people can recommend me? A local place had a lot of Springfield handguns, but not much else (just one place though). I was able to hold a 92fs fairly well. It didn't feel too large or too small.

Guide me Genmay.

Try single-stack 9mm, .40 or maybe 10mm 1911A1s. Good parts situation, ten rounds or less, proven design, heavy (quicker follow-up shots)...

Looks like I'm reading a lot of positive things about the XD .40. I looked at the XDM, but I know Cali won't let me have that mag and I'm not sure if I could find it out here considering that.

well, IMO the .40 has more recoil than .45, bigger number doesn't necessarily mean bigger recoil, but thats another argument.

Since you live in CA, it doesn't really matter if its a high cap pistol or not. The XD-40, and the XD-M , are both awesome .40 caliber pistols. The XD-M is a little bit redesigned, with a match grade barrel as well. STI also makes 1911 frame, double stack .40 caliber handguns that are really nice too. Also can look into Glocks, Sigs, etc. But I dont know much about them.

a 45 has too much weight/recoil compared to a 40? Thats news to me, i find the 40 substantially more snappy and within ounces of a typical 45.

but anyway why not just go with what you know, say something like a beretta 92/96 or a sig 226/228. Id recomend those infinately more times than that croation abortion otherwise known as the xd.

As already stated, you'll most likely find a .45 much more comfortable than a .40. .40, in my opinion, has the worst characteristics of all common platforms. It holds less than a standard 9mm (obviously), and is much snappier than the "generally" more powerful .45.

That said, there are a variety of .45 pistols that should suit your needs. If your geared towards the XD platform, then check out their .45.

I have a 92FS. It's too big to carry unless you're a fucking gorilla or open carry (is that even legal in CA?).

Get a Glock G27 or G23 or compact USP in .40 if you want something to carry around town. Both can be had for under $700 if you get a good deal.

What's your MOS man? There's gotta be some Guns & Ammo tard who works with you and if that isn't the case, just about any armorer would know a thing or two about non-issued weapons and how to get a hold of them in CA.
