Help Me Build a Tack Driver

I'm beginning to start researching my next firearm. I've decided that I want to build a tack driver. Here are my initial thoughts and requirements.

- I will be using it for mostly target shooting and occasionally hunting large game (e.g. whitetail deer and on up)

- I'd like a caliber that is flat shooting and carries it's energy well. It also shouldn't be hard to find and available in most rifles (not rare). The longest shots I'll be taking will probably be around 200 yards though If I take a hunting trip out west it will have to be able to shoot considerably longer shots. I've been thinking maybe .308 or .300 win mag

- As for a platform I generally like to buy American built arms though I'm semi-open to this. I've been looking at the Remington 700.

- Although I love the looks of a finely crafted wood stock, this one will need to be synthetic. Please keep in mind that the primary goal is accuracy. Maybe something that allows for the barrel to free float??

- I'd like to put a nice scope on it that can be used up close and far away.

- A bi pod would be nice to have also.

- Price should be kept around $1,500.

Remington 700P in .308.

Ours shoots 1" groups at 200 yards with no problems at all.

The same gun in 35 Whelen is almost spot on comparable out to 500 yrds.. when push comes to shove I would take the 35 caliber bullet for better overall performance.

In case noone has noticed, I love the 35 Whelen

What version of the 700 comes in 35 whelen? Sounds like an interesting round.

I know the 700 P is very accurate to extream distances, I just don't have the land to test it out. :P Or the skill really . . . .

i held a 700 in 35 whelen the other day. i was pretty impressed with the gun, it was about 20 years old but in good shape and the bolt was pretty nice. i'm just not a fan of the 700 trigger, but thats my personal opinion (which i take alot of shit for )

The 700 CDL..they also offer it in the 750 Semi Auto (in a carbine with a 18.5" barrel and a 7 1/4 lb rifle that would be a deer killin motherfucker ... as well as a regular 22" barrel model)

but I believe when I buy one I am going to try and find one in a pump action rifle.
