It's not going to be 100% effective, as there is always the possibility of something weird happening, basically the last 2 weeks of a woman's cycle are the "safest." That is not to say the last "half" as women have different cycles. Regardless of the length of the cycle though, Ovulation occurs approximately 14 days prior to the next period's start.

On a "standard" 28 day cycle, that would be day 14, so days 15-28 should be fairly safe. On a 30 day cycle, it would be day 16, so 17-30 would be safe (I'd wait an extra day to be sure tho). If you (or your girl, if u r a guy) keep careful track of things, you should be able to predict pretty closely when ovulation will occur. The least safe days are going to be (on a 28 day cycle) days 11-14. Sperm can generally survive in there for up to about 3 days. Also, there is always the off chance of ovulation happening earlier than normal, causing a shorter cycle one month, so you can't be all "oh, it's only day 9, so we're ok" cuz what if for some strange reason the egg drops on day 11 or 12? (It's not common, but is normal for things like stress to cause this to happen, but from what I understand, much less common for ovulation to be later in the cycle.)

So rather than just not doing it AT ALL until she gets on the pill, at least you know that you can be reasonably safe for that last week or two before she expects to get her period...better a couple times a month than not at all, right?

Also, if her period is real irregular, it's MUCH harder to predict this sort of thing...AND it's much easier to use this info for TRYING to get pregnant, than trying NOT to get pregnant.

I don't generally disagree with anything you've mentioned here, with one exception: assuming you can predict the day of ovulation accurately, I would definitely plan on missing the actual day of ovulation and the entire day after (ovum can survive a bit over 24 hours without being fertilized before it degrades - some sources will tell you up to 48 hours).

Other than that. I just want to emphasize that the reasoning here is predicated on a future event that may or may not happen on time. In other words, the decision to have unprotected sex on day 16 with a woman usually on a 28-day cycle is predicated on the assumption that her period will start right on time - and it isn't uncommon for this not to happen. Which is what makes methods like "natural family planning / rhythm method" a poor primary contraceptive - even when using dates, checking cervical mucous, and charting basal body temperature, this method still boasts about a 25% failure rate per year (compare to the ~20% annual failure rate with withdrawal/pulling-out, which is widely considered a dumb idea for contraception). Aside from shifts in the date of ovulation that can occur, extra ovulations are also not unheard of.

Anyway, I know you aren't suggesting using this reasoning as a primary means of contraception...just wanted to throw that out there in case anyone reading made that leap.

You are absolutely right! and thank you for elaborating & adding the stats. I felt like I was getting a little long winded and needed to stop, but I knew there was more info to be given.

It is such a fuzzy thing, since every girl is a little different, and there is always the possibility of random changes in the cycle. Yolo's concern about random condom breakage/slippage is what spurred me to comment (comment? more like write a novel!). Just wanted it to be known that certain times (such as the last...week and a half-ish before her expected period) are safer than others, but I absolutely stress that it's not foolproof, and ALWAYS use "real" birth control (condoms, pills, diaphragms, SOMETHING) in addition to this "method."

Again, this information (along with all the temperature, & mucus stuff) is most effectively used when TRYING to conceive, and used alone is not incredibly effective AGAINST pregnancy, and has NO effectiveness against STDs, obviously!!

They should make a form of the pill, patch,or shot for guys to take!
Everything a girl has used at least one or two people have gotten pregnant using. Another downside would be if you decide to stop taking the pill and wanted to have a kid you have to plan this a year before you want to get pregnant so your body can get back to normal.

Not really. They suggest waiting a month until your cycle comes back naturally but I've never heard of having to wait a whole year before trying.

It's not that you have to wait a whole year before even trying, but that it can take up to a year for your cycle to normalize, thus making it more difficult to plan for a pregnancy, so they say it can take up to a year to be able to get pregnant, don't expect it to happen right away.
I always thought this was funny, if you miss your pill one or two days, you can get pregnant by accident, but it can take a year of intentionally not taking the pill to get pregnant on purpose.

Here's a question about missing pills on a 21-day pack. I just realized now (being a friday) that i forgot to take the last pill in my pack, which was supposed to be taken on wednesday. So technically I should be on my 'period' for these days. Should I just scrap that last pill? Or should I take it, despite the fact that its two days late on my period week. I won't be having sex while I'm on my period.

My GF is just about to start the pill, she's waiting until her next period though. She usually has a really long cycle, like 35-40 days instead of 28, so how will that work with the pill? Will her cycle become shorter and more regular? It seems like normally there would be a week there after she runs out of the normal pills and starts using the placebos that she would be unportected basically.

I realize you posted this a bit ago but yeah, I'd say just forget that last pill, have your period, and start a new pack next month.

The pill should make her periods conform to its dosing schedule. High exogenous estrogen and progesterone for three weeks and then nothing is going to cause the endometrium to break down regardless of her regular cycle.

Girlfriend's on the patch. Had sex the other night without a condom for the first time ever, kind of a spur of the moment thing, but I still pulled out. We use a condom every single other time. We got the morning after pill the next day, just in case, and she took the first dose probably 15hrs after the act, so it should've still been pretty high on the range of effectiveness. Her period should probably be within the next two weeks or so, but I'm still slightly worried/paranoid, even though I probably have no reason to be.

That's about it.

Patch + Morning After Pill + Pull Out = no babies. Unless the patch and pill are completely ineffective on her and the swimmer count in your precum is godlike.

GF started on the pill about a month ago. After her normal period she just had another one about 2 weeks later. It just ended but she wasn't on the last week of her pills during her period. So she's taking the last row of pills, the placebos, but her period is already over. It seems like there's basically no protection until she starts her next pack. However the nurse at the student clinic said this is what she should do (finish the current pack, start on the new pack a week after her period ended)

So do I have to use a condom for the next week? Her normal period used to be about 35 days and she wouldn't ovulate until midway through but with the pills obviously it's throwing everything off.
