.204 Target Rifle

The time has come to add another .204 to the family, and I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. The gun will be all custom, but I'm having some trouble deciding a platform. I've narrowed it down to -

- Remington 700 action, rifle modeled after M40a5

- AR-15, rifle in FF 24" BBL configuration, no iron sights, target grip, etc.

All I'm looking for is 1/2 MOA or better at 100 yards, both should be able to achieve that. The AR would be significantly cheaper, but I think the 700 will hold superior accuracy.

Id suggest a savage action, due to the ease of changing out barrels.

You may be pleased to know Nosler has recently released .204 Ballistic Tip bullets

I can't help you on the rifle, though

Thompson Contender? Just for shiggles.

Should be way cheaper than even an AR.

Hmmmm.

"Gun will be all custom..."

"Thompson Contendor?"

.....

Anywho. The Nosler bullets have been out for some time now, and have failed to perform any better than the 40grn V-Maxs, both of which fall worse than the 39grn Blitzking and 40grn Berger LTB.

As of now it's looking in favor of the AR, or I might have the CZ customs department build me up a custom varmint platform. Mauser action ftw.

Non quick change barrels FTL. Your basically getting a barrel burner cartridge, id deffinetly, look into the savage action.

The .204 has far better barrel life than .264, 6.5-.284, 6mmPPC etc platforms and I've had barrels in those last me well over a year. Replacing barrels is nothing I am afraid to do, and I expect to do it more so than I need to. But waiting for the turnaround every year or so is fine with me.

If "out for some time now" means Q1 2006, then yeah, you're right. I would know, I made them.

...and I don't know shit about other bullets, only the ones from Nosler.

sorry for the useless attempt to help
