Hey everyone. I'm in the market for my first car and since I have a very limited budget, I've been checking out private sales that I see on the side of the road. Today I looked at a Saab 900S that was for sale for $1800. The only problem is, that there was no information posted about the car on the for sale sign. It just had the phone number and the asking price. I looked around and saw that it was a 5spd manual and it has about 217k miles on it. I don't know what model year it is, though it looks to be at least late 80's early 90's. Does anyone know anything about Saabs? I think Kidane just bought one of these (or a similar model) car. I'd really like to know about them. It was in superb condition.

Buy it!

Hard to tell what year it is, since they look the same from 1979 - 1993.
The non-turbo Saabs are pretty slow, but I like them. The transmissions are definately the weak spot, watch for grinding in 1st and 2nd gear.

I didn't realize that! That's a freaking long time without a design change!

I'm guessing I'm dealing with a later model though, probably early 90's because the asking price is a bit high. KBB value is only 1500, they're asking 1800. I'll probably call and ask more about the car, but if I do end up buying it I'm probably going to try to get it down to around 1200 hopefully.

european cars tend to go with very subtlle body changes by the years. i'm an audi guy myself, and my girl is into saabs. she has a '98 900s turbo, and it has treated us very well. it may cost a few dollars more to maintain, but it's well worth it.

Is it worth it to buy one with such high mileage though? It looks to be in excellent shape, but I really only gave it a quick once over.

Today, four weeks later, it has 277,000.
Just check it out and make sure it's in decent shape.

Don't give them more than KBB either. Saabs depreciate quickly, for whatever reason.

That's a lot of miles. My dad is going to be a pain in the ass about the mileage :/

I wouldn't give them more than KBB. I'm going to try to talk them down I think.

No.
The 900S is a higher equpiment level than the base 900, at least from what I can remember.

The car he's looking at is the standard 130 HP 2.1L I4.

I distinctly rememer selling an exhaust to some woman in a 900S last week. We were all because it was a turbo.
