Dodge Journey...WTF am I thinking!!!

Ok ya I know, take the man-card, cut my dick off, where's the rainbow hat. At least Dodge isn't running commercials like this...

+ YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

The newer model with this interior...

That is pretty nice for a family ute and with the Pentastar V6 actually drivable.

The old interior got heavily critizied for being shit & rightfully so.

I know people will say just get a minivan...sorry but I can't. Even my wife hates them so what does that tell ya. My only other thoughts were to cheap out a bit instead of buying new & pick up an Audi A4 Avant used. However 7>5 seats and knowing you have that option is nice. What really annoys me is now Volvo doesn't use 5 cylinders anymore and used isn't possible because of no warranty. I always liked Volvo 5 cylinders after driving a couple here & there.
Now we don't have to do this today or tomorrow as the second crotch polyp isn't due til summer but starting early to get my ducks in a row. I thought about a Prius V then slapped myself back into reality. I also thought about the new Ford C-Max but it won't have AWD and honestly with the way our city plows and the hills to our house...kinda a must plus we travel a lot regardless of weather.
Wife needs something safe but not huge SUV like because really that is just stupid.

Did I miss anything? New under $30,000 preferably 7 seats w/ AWD, used whatever just has to NOT break every 500 miles and follow the same criteria. Yes I know Audi=$$$ in repairs but honestly I've never had that happen to me in any VW/Audi product. The very least I could diagnose the issue myself vs. other cars.

Uh...no. I no longer condemn every single model made by a given manufacturer based on past reputation, but I really don't think the Dodge Journey is best in it's class or even near the top. If you don't want to go the full blown big SUV route then I would check out the GMC Acadia/Chevy Traverse. I've got a 2010 Chevy Equinox that is even smaller but would be fine for one or even two rugrats in the backseat, (the seat slides forward or back for adult legroom) and has a choice of I4/V6 engines and AWD.

edit- If you want a true 7 seater (as in for adults over 5' tall) then you might want to get in the full size SUV mindset..

Acadia we considered as it is at likable on the exterior styling level, the Traverse is just ugly.

Hrmm they really don't get good fuel economy compared to the Dodge. Granted it is not the decision maker but it doesn't hurt to get better on the highway.

LOL A friend just asked me. "You like VW's right? So just get a Routan."

Does your friend realize that he suggested a VW bodied Dodge Caravan?

The Journey is nice, especially in R/T guise. Rides on the same platform as the Caravan / Town & Country / Routan trio. The Journey was the replacement for the short wheelbase Caravan.

Ya know the more I think about I should just nix the notion of fuel economy with something so big. I guess anything over 20 is a gift.

After a thorough talking to, he is sorry now. Thing is I would love a TDI Touareg but fuck the over $40k asking price.

Figure out what is in this class from each manufacturer. If you don't like GM, fine, but go drive the Explorer, Flex, Cherokee, Highlander, etc.

Personally I would never buy a Dodge new. The resale is just horrible on them. Then again, I bought a new Fusion and while Ford is better on average, the most popular 4 door sedan out there doesn't make a good case either

For what it's worth. I checked out the new Cherokees and REALLY liked them. I still question if we should have got one.

:edit
anything over 20 is golden IMHO.
Hell, the Fuze only gets 22.8 MPG. Pathetic.

Dude, Volvo 5-cylinder with a CPO warranty? Plenty of 2.4i and T5s out there.

TDI Touareg without the warranty

ANYTHING Chrysler is a crapshoot; and while there's some decent product showing up (SRT8 Jeep and it's base), they're still products of previous ownership (an investment group that didn't know shit about automobile manufacturing--there was a REASON Mercedes firesaled them!).

While Fiat is being run by Luca diMontezemolo, and has improved immensely under his guidance (just as Ferrari went from laughingstock in Formula1 to 7-time world champions, and their road cars have become quality machinery, instead of super fast and super quirky expensive paperweights), time will tell if they are going to be able to pass that on to Chrysler. And that time is not here yet.

OP, there's PLENTY of product out there that just works better. Ford Explorer would fit your requirements quite nicely, as would the Edge, or even the Flex.

If you're insisting on new, and on warranties, you can't go wrong with the Ford offerings. [/FordWhoring]

And there's others better, stay away from the uterine horns.

The Journey is super cheap, the interior isn't the horrible pile of shit it was before and the 3.6l is ok.

Beyond that, I can't say anything.

edit:

new, under 30k, AWD.... 2012 Escape?

Doesn't seat 7, but with the brand new 13 Escape coming soon and dealers (at least near me) being PACKED with 12s on the lot, I imagine you could get a loaded Escape for well under 30k. I'd rather have that than the Journey.

OR

I like the new Grand Cherokee. You can snag a pretty base one with 4x4 for under $30k. I'd rather have that than the Journey.

turns out there's a lot I'd rather have than the Journey.

Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 will have superior reliability over the Dodge. So would any Ford crossover/SUV. The RAV 4 V6 has great performance for a compact SUV (0-60 in close to 6 seconds plus good mileage). Doesn't sound like you need 7 seats.
