male fashion anyone?

Hi everyone!

Here's some background info on myself. I'm a huge reader of reddit and lately have been reading /r/seduction for some info on... seduction. I'm also a freshman CS major at a pretty big public school in Illinois. ~42000 students. I'm asian and from California just so you know.

One of the posts caught my attention as it directly applied to my life. It's about dressing nicely. I thought about the way I dress everyday and it really hit me. I dress like shit. Well, not completely shit as some people here in college, but shit as in the "average" college student here. It's snowing a bit here and most of the time I am wearing some North Face jacket, a pretty average pair of Levi jeans, and a pair of Etnies (I'm flat feet and it's comfortable). I've bought most of the clothes I currently wear myself, so it's not like my mom picked them out.

Outside of academics, I have a lot of goals planned for next semester. I'm a strong supporter of the "work hard, play hard" mentality and I definitely don't have a problem meeting girls and having some fun. The only problem I have right now is my own image. Over winter break, I'll start working out (haven't been able to at school because of work load) and improving my image.

The problem with my area is that its a 100% college town and there doesn't seem like any places that have very fashionable places to get clothes. It is definitely not a city area like LA or New York. I'm also in Illinois and I would say a lot of people here also don't care much about fashion (the weather isn't the best here, a lot of people come from small towns, etc). I've been to the mall numerous times and the only store I can think of is Pac Sun, the rest are just the standard stores you find at malls like Macy's, Sears, etc.

So my point is for those of you into fashion and stuff... what stores should I be going to either in real life or online? Also what websites? I'm not looking for an American Eagle or "skater punk" look. I just want to look more unique, stand out, etc. There's an Urban Outfitters here and I've been to it a couple times, but never long enough to actually check out clothes. I'll stop by when I have time...

For now I've been browsing http://lookbook.nu/.

I hope someone can chime in here... I know there must be at least some people!

Find a girl and take a road trip to the outlet mall in Oakbrook outside of Chicago. It's gigantic and has many, many stores. You can show said girl styles you like, and said girl can at the least make sure your clothes go together well.

Urban Outfitters is cool, most people either love or hate it -- I'm not sure you'd want to shop there if you don't want to look like the typical college student/hippie/hipster though. The best thing about Urban Outfitters is their clearance/bargain racks; you can't beat comfortable "designer" denim for $10. I have several pairs and they haven't worn out in over a year.

You should also check out H & M -- the clothes aren't necessarily of the highest quality but they arguably look quite fashionable and aren't that expensive.

The most important thing when wanting to look good is to make sure your clothes fit properly. You can spend all the money in the world on nice clothes, but if they don't fit well, you have just wasted your money.

look online for looks as well. www.karmaloop.com, kind of on the hiphop, preppy side but there is some looks that work for everyone.

get a nice pair of jeans. something fitted properly doesnt sit to baggy, nor skinny but slimming. every once in a while you can hit up a site like www.beyondtherack.com or www.hautelook.com and get some great deals on high end denim. like True Religion's, Rock n Republics for around 100.

if you are going to stick with skate shoes, try to find pairs that are less bulky and more on the lower profile side. Nike SB Janoski's, old school pair of vans or chuck taylors are always a classic look. but like it was said above its all about fit. get clothes that fit you properly.

change/update/whatever your attitude and willingness to be outgoing before bothering to spend money. you can go a LONG way by wearing clean tshirts and shorts all the time. doesn't mean everything has to be name brand or all matched up and you strut around in a matching 3 piece all the time.

you will go farther in being more sociable/liked by womens if you are very outgoing/dashing/challenging and rocking clean tshirt and shorts then you will be being a quiet guy all dressed up.

A huge fraction of "dressing nicely" is fit. Get in decent shape, and wear clothes that fit. You can rock a tshirt and jeans (I got hit on all the time wearing that), but it has to fit and emphasis your assets. I'm not talking nut-hugger jeans, but don't look sloppy. Make sure your shit is clean too, lots of college guys slack like crazy on that.

Style is a hard thing, it takes awhile to figure out what you like, what you're comfortable with, and what actually works for you. Don't buy a ton of stuff all at once, get a few things and work them into your rotation. Don't buy stuff because you can wear it with a certain pair of pants or whatever, buy something because it's a good piece of clothing and it'll give you a useful wardrobe piece. "Standing out" is even harder, because you have to either have impeccable fit and coordination or wear weird/loud shit to jump out.

I have to disagree with the "take a girl shopping" advise. Most girls don't know shit about men's clothing, and take their cues from what's "fashionable" right then, not what looks good. Look around, see what guys you think are rocking their look and take pieces of that and work it for yourself. Experiment. You might look stupid one day and then kill it the next with fairly subtle details.

thanks for all the feedback, will definitely get in good shape this break. I was thinking of trying out Army ROTC next semester so I'll be training for running.

Also thanks for the websites/stores tips. To me -- male fashion is more like dressing more appropriately. I'm a freshman right now and in some of the higher level classes I am in, the grad students/seniors are all dressed really nicely. I show up in class in the typical college wear and everyone knows I'm a freshman. It's definitely not wearing designer this designer that.

The thread is about fashion, not scoring with sluts in a sorority.

Any guy with an ounce of charisma can get laid in a college party.

T-shirt and jeans is not fashionable. It's comfortable.

I'd avoid Giltman.com as suggested earlier. They tend to carry a lot of things made just for them, that aren't of the same quality that you'd normally expect from the brand.

I live in a dink Texas town so don't have any stores here. I can't tell you the last time I bought something local, everything comes online.

And as noted above, you can wear a $5,000 suit and still look like shit if it doesn't fit right. Don't listen to women. Dress to feel good about yourself, not for others.

A problem with a lot of chain store brands is sizing. Things are made for the American fatass. Just go to JC Penney or Kohls and take a tape measure. Those size 38 pants don't measure 38 inches...Closer to 40 or 41. Same goes for shirts. A large shirt is much closer to extra large. Mostly applies to old farts clothing like Dockers, Perry Ellis, etc and even fancier brands like Brooks Brothers.

Brands I've been pleased with and can find lots of places on line:

Original Penguin (owned by Perry Ellis, but still good)
John Varvatos
Earnest Sewn
DKNY

Nothing real exclusive or high end, just what I've found that I like.

Stores to check out online:
Amazon
Yoox
SmartBargains
Overstock

eBay can have some steals if you know what you are buying. A lot of people will blow $$$ on a Prada blazer, but a Gieves and Hawkes will go for nothing, the latter likely being superior. Have to spend the time and look at dang near every auction

SierraTradingPost is pretty good too. Never buy anything there without using a coupon. They have 30% off coupons at least every other week.

Ebay is great but you really have to know your shit. Know the brand, know what styles you like well enough to judge from some shitty picture, etc. I've gotten a lot of junk on Ebay from stuff that looked decent. But I've also gotten some absurdly good deals, so I keep going back. It's a good way to try style that you weren't sold on otherwise.

If you want to try to wear sport coats but aren't sure what you really want or can pull off, thrift stores are a good place to try stuff. Get a jacket for a couple bucks, see how you like the look without any risk. They aren't as likely to be funky as pants or shirts, so you don't have to feel gross about wearing used clothing.
