can you ID this rifle?

long long ago, my best friend's father found this rifle in a barn he was working on (clearing it out, replacing rotten boards, etc), he took it to the owner of the barn and was told he could have it
he gave it to my best friend, but no one really knows what it is, doesn't have a clip, don't know what caliber it is, any of that fun stuff

so i brought pics here to see if anyone knows what it is

the logo looks like a sort of... crown? or maybe a teapot? and it says FAT 42 underneath it

it needs to be reblued, and needs a decent finish on it and some cleaning, but it appears to be in good shape

A pic of the front end might help... I think it's a frenchie though. Don't ask me why

Also: Detail pics of the action (open and closed). If that's a round knob at the back of it, disregard the frenchie thing plz.

yeah, it's a knobby type thing, sorta a cone on a knob? friend is a little far away, so it's a bit hard to get pics

Looks like an Italian Paraviccini-Carcano M91 to me, almost certainly chambered for 6.5x52.

Same model of rifle with a scope mounted was used by Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot JFK.

Carcano M91/41

Should be chambered in 6.5x52C

I probably wouldn't go shooting it without a gunsmith looking at it.

Does it have a straight or turned bolt handle? Most I've seen are turned.

you mean just a 90 degree from the bolt? or curved to follow the stock?
if so, it's straight, no curve
and that is a good idea about the gunsmith, thank you

did it use clips? or what? and where can i find them?

Check the page I linked to. It'll show you what the en-bloc clips look like. You'll most likely have to go digging around at surplusrifle and eBay to find clips.

thank you much
so the clip is loaded from the top down, and the spent clip is ejected out the bottom?

Yes.

Definitely get it looked at before firing it, though. Could have a lot of pitting, rust, etc.

i have a carcano calvary carbine. Fun gun to shoot, not so fun gun to buy ammo for. You can get ammo at places like aimsurplus.com, but good luck finding any around town.

i've had some other people tell me that it's not that safe of a rifle, but they haven't gotten back to me about what the possible issues are, anyone have any info?
