If you encounter a mother w/ cubs I thought that you were not suppost to shoot at them being it would mean almost certain death for the cubs if the mother dies.

Why couldn't you? I've put countless slugs through my Rem 870

it depends on the choke of the gun as to whether or not you should shoot slugs through it
also it depends if the barrel is rifled or not

The reason for the young bear's quick departure came into view. It was another bear, down the trail about 50 yards. I eased the 870 to my shoulder and gazed through the scope. The bear was standing at an odd angle and just beyond a brushpile. No clear shot. A short time later, the first bear came in from the other direction and faced the second one. Though the first bear was definitely bigger, I still had no shot at it. The second bear stood almost nose-to-nose with the larger one, broadside. Considering that I would only have one more day to hunt, I made the decision to shoot. My chest began to burn with adrenaline as I still hoped the larger bear would step forward for a clear shot. Shooting light was running out fast.

My first shot hit the bear solidly behind the right shoulder. It dropped, then got back up. I then put two more Core-Lokt slugs through its shoulders. The last thing I wanted was to track a wounded bear through the thick brush and trees in the dark. But that would be unnecessary. The bear dropped and didn't move again.

Each slug had completely penetrated, so bullet recovery was impossible."

Choke, yes

rifling or smoothbore is irrelevant

I dont know about the choke on the Wingmaster. It looks like it doesnt have a threaded muzzle for a choke but on the barrell it says just "FULL". Again I am just borrowing this gun until I get my 30-06 but it doesnt look like there is a choke it doenst visibly flare or anything.

"The prospect of hunting bear in Maine was an attractive one, but the methods seemed more than foreign to me. When Remington's Eddie Stevenson advised that we'd be hunting out of treestands with Remington 870 shotguns, I was a little perplexed. As a law enforcement officer, I've carried an 870 for some years now, but never has it occurred to me to hunt a bear with it. The idea of whacking a black bear with either buckshot or a lead slug didn't immediately seem appealing."

Yea I guess I'm not good enough. I have a treestand. I won a state riflery championship so I think I can shoot OK.I know where there is a bear game trail in the adirondacks Any more reasons that I shouldn't do this? BTW I would be using iron sights instead of a scope but I can group Remmington Slugger shots within 6 inches at 75 yards.

I'd urge you to find out the most effective bear killing round, no matter what. I'm not a hunter, but I don't think its 00 buck. If you don't make an effort for a humane kill and just want to be two guys unloading on it with 00, I hope it eats you.
