Why is there so much fucking importance on a number on a transcript that no one will care about once you have your diploma?

It's an INTERNSHIP. Get your shit together and move on, and who gives a shit what your parents think. You're responsible for your life and your success, not them.

There is way too much pressure on some people to get that perfect number, when in fact no one on this planet is perfect. My mom is barely concerned what my GPA actually is, just the fact after I slacked through HS and have managed to pick my ass up and I have been succeeding in college to make something of myself.

Man up, find a job, you'll figure it out if you really want it.

college has become really competitive in the last couple years.

Trying to get in a program at my local CC requires a competitive GPA of at least 3.5 .
requiring me to drop a class i'm currently getting a solid B in so i can try and bring it up to an A next semester. Business majors at a university are even worse

It's amazing that just a few years ago expectations were incredibly low. Just being average at college, let alone going at all, is simply not enough any more

At least you're not a god damned pre-med. I have a motherfucking 3.59 and my family always fucking reminds me that I need to get it up to a 3.8 if I want med school. Don't forget my brother riding my ass about getting internships and clubs and research....God damnit.

Why is it so difficult to become a doctor

Thank your parents for the money they invested in your education, tell them that it doesn't really matter what they think of your GPA, and take out a loan to finish school.

You got a lot more than a lot of other people get, so be thankful, and be proud of what you have accomplished.

at some point in your life, probably about now, it's good to figure out what you want independently of outside sources. that way you have no one to let down but you can't blame anyone else for your failures either.

also, if you are serious about landing a great internship/job than use the conversation with parents as a motivator.

Wow!! I graduated college with a 3.15GPA, and I am the sole income in my family. I support my wife and two kids, a mortgage, and two cars.

Gee, I am a fucking failure too.

Don't take it to PM---just go away.

People who go into finance are only interested in making money for themselves, you go and move money around in ways to make money and do nothing to improve society or help people.

How anyone could chose that career and live with themselves is beyond me. The fact that your parents want you to go and become rich and anything else will disappoint is also disturbing.

Yeah, who wants to make money for themselves

Wake up and realize 95% of the world doesn't give a fuck about you anyways. And there are a lot of things you could do for other people with financial knowledge, given how bad most people are with their money and making decisions (see: current mortgage crisis)

Your ignorance of what finance actually entails is astounding. Considering you live in the U.S., a capitalist country, you should be ashamed.

Have you or your parents ever owned a house? Try saving up 500k before you can actually buy it. Same goes for car or small business.

Financiers/bankers allow for the most effective distribution and flow of capital so that society as a whole can be more productive and have a higher standard of living.

Imagine a group of people that have a brilliant product that can cure millions of people, but no money to build the very expensive testing and production facilities. What in the world can they do? Go to the government that's riddled with bureaucracy and has absolutely no training in valuation and figuring out the potential value and success of a product? I know I don't want my tax dollars being redistributed by the fucking idiots in Washington. No, they can go to a bank or investors, who'll be able to see that THIS project will be a success, and can fund it.

Here's a more complicated example: a true American, a wheat farmer has no idea what the price of wheat is going to be next year when his harvest comes in. He knows what it costs today, and how much it has to cost for him to make a living. If prices happen to drop, he's not going to be able to feed his family. But, he can go to a financier, and secure a price for the future that he know he'll be comfortable with. If it goes up, the financier makes out with a bit of cash, if it goes down, the financier is out of luck.

And lets not forget, the US is to a large extent a free market. The only reason finacial jobs exist is because there's a great demand for their work and therefore a lot of good is derived from their services.

God this is so true.

I'm 26 and about to graduate with a comp eng degree... long story but I've had to have my parents help me because my marriage collapsed and getting through school was my biggest deal since I was a dad now.

I think once I graduate I may just move as far away as possible from family. Love them to death but they've prevented me growing as an adult.

Good luck with everything man.

EDIT: McGee didn't really fall into the other 50%... I shoud've eread more before I quoted.

This is the problem with these threads. 50% say the parents are retarded, the other 50% say you are and that they had to walk uphill both ways in -50 degree weather, work 4 jobs and live on ramen noodles.

You can talk to your parents in a way that doesn't point fingers but ultimately if they pay the bills you have to get shit done or leave the house and strike out on your own.

The emphasis on grades is lousy but necessary. I'm lucky to have parents who can afford to help me with school and who do not pressure me to do exactly what is needed to a T. I decided my program (Commerce at Ryerson in Toronto) and I decided whether I wanted to go for an internship ( I will in a couple years).

Did you bust your ass? Then explain to them how you tried, the amount of work you put in and why you think you fell short of your goals. There are always options... good luck man.
