No offense, but that's not a good casual dress shirt look.

I do it all the time. Roll up the sleeves and wear some jeans, pretty simple. Oh, and don't even think about buttoning up all the way to the top.

buttoning all the way up works well with smaller collared shirts, like dh, jil sander, or raf simons

it's easier to leave the shirt out if you're tall, however, it only really works to tuck your shirt in if you're tall as well

I'm pretty short, so if I tuck my shirt in I look like a waiter

But then again, I rarely ever wear dress shirts, it's not really my style

If you want to wear your dress shirt out of your pants, do like CrazyIke said and roll up your sleeves, and if it's colder out find a nice sweater or vest to wear over it

Alternatively, wear a t-shirt or undershirt under the dress shirt. It gives you a more casual look that way.

AND DON'T DO ANY OF THIS WITH KHAKIS

Find a nice pair of leather shoes, a nice pair of jeans that aren't too baggy, and then find a dress shirt that isn't too long or baggy

I know what you mean, but with what he's looking for I don't think all the way is appropriate.

Unless I'm wearing a vest to go with it, I usually don't tuck it in. There's a ton of different ways, but the average way would be basically what I said.

More advice just in case; If you decide to wear a sweater, don't tuck in the shirt. Common sense one would think, but I see a ton of idiots tuck it in.

I don't know anyone that takes khakis seriously

when you see a guy wearing khakis these days, you know right away that he's probably a big nerd or an engineer. I love going to the engineering department at my old University because half the guys have khakis, new balance shoes and look repulsive

I always though of khakis as being a staple of the preppy crowd. I don't see too many engineers/nerds around here wearing them. I don't get the hate everyone throws towards them. I have a nice pair of darker khaki chinos myself that I really like (yes I know chinos aren't khakis but they look the same).

I dunno, my city is pretty "hip" and "fashionable", with both hipster and club/gino varieties, and no one wears khakis when going out at night

If you wear them, you stand out and look like a loser

I'm sure it's different in the States, but I'm just going by what I've noticed here
