Any Makarov Experience?

I was talking to a cousin of mine at a cookout a few weeks ago about conceal and carry, and I mentioned getting an XD eventually (I'll be 21 in a little over a year). He personally prefers his compact .357 SIG Glock, but mentioned Makarovs being well suited for the role and got me thinking about them. Anyone here have any opinions with a Makarov?

Makarovs are very cheap, generally well made. The 9x18 isnt the best defense cartridge since its less powerfull than 9x17 (.380) but its certainly better than no pistol. Most maks are all steel and heavy. Since they're not browning link they tend to have more recoil than a similar BL gun. The heavy construction does suck up a lot of recoil so they're not that bad. 9mm mak is best ordered in bulk on the internet since many places (even the ones that sell maks) dont carry it. Stay way from the P-64s. I've measure most of the ones I've transferred at around 12# trigger pulls.

Make sure what ever you get you shoot first. Be that a makarov or an XDM.

I can't speak to the Makarov, but I've really enjoyed my XD9 so far. A bit difficult to learn on, but once you've trained enough on it, you are basically going to have perfect trigger control.

i picked up a spring kit for my p64 which made the trigger pull 100000x better. so if you pick up a p64, pick a spring kit.

Who made your spring kit and what did it cost?

My wife CCs a East German Makarov. Small and reliable with an excellent trigger. It was my first handgun purchase back in 1992 and it's a great little gun.

My wife also CCWs a Makarov. Her's is Bulgarian and when I bought it back in 2001 it looked like it was brand new. It is quite easy to carry and cover up or carry in a laptop bag. As soon as I got it, my wife immediately wanted to claim it as her own as it fit her hands better than it did mine.

After running a few hundred rounds of FMJ through it and polishing up the feed ramp, it will eat anything I feed it. If you do go the Makarov route, I would recommend getting a few boxes of FMJ before you try and feed it JHP. You can find great deals on case lots of ammo on the internet with a little bit of searching.

Recoil is a bit stout but very managable. Like it has already been mentioned here, the construction is all steel so it is not as light as the newer compacts, but that also helps absorb the recoil.

This was my CCW until earlier this year when I bought myself a full size 1911 and I would have no qualms about carrying it again if the need arises.

I've had nothing but exception results using wolff springs. They're definately good stuff.

I found with Maks in the past that chasing a feed ramp polish with some flitz on a qtip improved feeding 10 fold. I dont know what kind of voodoo is in flitz but it is fantastic stuff.
