If you haven't played or beaten it, give it a try. Yes, some parts are rough around the edges (bland side quests on some bland planets). The story alone is worth it. Feels just like you are a star in a movie.

I cannot wait for the second one. I like the darker feel. It worked for Empire Strikes Back and the Two Towers, so why not here?

That was the main thing I disliked about the first one (thought overall I thought it was an excellent game).

The whole side-missions and planets just felt so damn generic. The worlds were not NEARLY as good or unique as the main story planets or anything.

Also how many times did they reuse the same generic lab/warehouses? Seemed to run into the same one on a ton of the planets.

Hopefully they make the side missions more unique and craft the worlds by hand rather then just generate them.

What? You dont want do drive around in circles and take potshots at the thresher maw and then drive over generally innavigable terrain to find that one last tungsten deposit you need before playing hide and seek with a warmech? Over and over and over?

I thought Mass Effect was way too console/arcade.

But you need to do all that if you don't want to, so at least you could just go to the main planets and still get a good 25-30 hours of a fantastic game.

they're called sidequests because you're not forced to do them in order to progress the game

exactly, i did one and was like "wtf, wow that's lame" and just did the main quest and it was awesome.

Still sucked that the side quests were pretty much all the same, it's more of a side quest that drags on.

What does that have to do with the Quality of it? Side quests in an rpg can be great, but with ME1 it was obvious that Bioware went for quanity over quality when designing the planets/side missions.

Yeah and the community wasn't very happy with it. So I hope they really worked on meaningful side quests, or just got rid of the system completely. No reason to half-ass something and make a blemish that shouldn't be there.

Though I did love going to a system and reading planet descriptions.

I remember there was planet you couldn't land on, that said it had a huge gash on it, that looked like it was created by a large, ancient mass driver. It's little touches that really sell the atmosphere.

fuuuck.

I really want to pass ME1 before getting into this. But I never got myself through that game

the load times and tedious missions... I'd rather watch someone play ME than actually play it. I just want to follow the story.

They are called side quests in BG and in DA as well. And they are not copy paste boring shit.

Side quests are there for a couple of reasons. One reason is to take a break from the main quest. The other is to improve your characters/get better at playing the game.
