So I played a good part of the way through Emerald, and got really fed up of how similar the game tended to be with all it's predecessors. I understand that innovation (nor graphics) have ever been a focus of any Pokemon game, but this looks pretty promising, original, and (not surprisingly) sold like wildfire in Japan. I'm skeptical but I'm willing to give it a shot based on the fact that the new Pokemon look absolutely baller.

The potential good news/bad news is that there will be no friends codes needed for trading, there's supposed to be a global trading network that connects you to peers all around the world who are looking to trade similar Pokemon. The problem with this is that they haven't confirmed that you'll be able to trade with friends across the country, which can be very useful for obtaining the other two starter Pokemon (you have to coordinate who starts their game over 5 times to trade all of them to one, then back again).

I'll be getting Pearl, Palkia looks sweet, and I'll probably start with the Monkey. I do have to say the last forms of all the starters are the coolest looking ones they've ever come up with.

So yeah, chime in fellow trainers. And don't forget you're going to have to play this in order to play the first online Wii game (kind of)!

Begin the game and pick the water one. Get to the town with the first gym. The Pokemon center there will be your first opportunity to trade with friend codes (takes about an hour, but to trade locally, you can use the first Pokemon center which takes about 20 minutes to get to). Trade over the water one to someone you know.

Turn off the DS, and at the title screen, press Up + B + Select. This will ask you to delete your data. Do so, start a new game, and pick the grass one. Trade over to the same person.

Repeat again and pick the fire one. This game will be the file you actually play, so make sure to name yourself correctly, what have you. Get to the Pokemon center, catch a couple throw away Pokemon, and get back your two starters.

This will take about 4 hours total, if you're fast. Just stock up on potions and don't worry about leveling your Pokemon too much to get past the trainers. The alternative is to breed the Pokemon, which I don't have too much experience with, but if you know any collection of people who have all three different starters between them, it's easy enough to do, apparently.

I'm a huge Pokemon fan. I'll be picking up Diamond and my girlfriend is getting Pearl. I'm going with the penguin starter. Penguins are not only badass, but I usually always go with the water starter. I'm insanely pumped for this game and it needs to come out faster!

i had pearl import the day it came out in japan. i'll be getting diamond when it hits america.

i have some low lvl pokemon ready to trade over for a neat little dream team :P

since i'll have both copies (and i'm banking on them being able to trade cross-region -- my japanese emerald can trade fine with american ruby) i'll be getting all starters (though i started with the water starter in pearl). it should be noted that these games don't have many fire pokemon at all, so fire starter is a good choice (and since it's also fighting, it can woop up on the water starter). the only other fire pokemon in the game is ponyta/rapidash.

if you have any questions, there's a good chance i can answer them. by the way, DP are the first pokemon games to not have a custom color cart.

(backdrop is my import VF5 )

Probally going to be picking up Diamond.

Is this a normal Pokemon game? IE collect some, get badges, beat the very best, game over? Or is there more to it this time around?

well you'll be dissapointed there. it's the same sort of story with some mild adjustments (for example,  it's like you have 2 rivals ). but in the end it's pretty much the same thing.

the GTS (global trade service -- might be named different for american release) is almost like a craigslist (i've never used craigslist so i'm going off assumptions) -- you put up a pokemon for trade and you have to pick a specific pokemon you want in return. once you put something up for trade you can continue doing whatever. check back at the GTS whenever you want to see if someone traded you. for the most part, searching for pokemon is useless because everyone is requesting a legendary, a starter, or lucario. i have had some luck by throwing an extra pokemon i had up there and requesting one i really wanted -- this obviously works better with the common pokemon. i have had zero luck actually searching for something that i want though. there's a globe you can walk up to and there'll be markers that mark where you've traded with. right now the japanese version only has japan and i have some markers across japan. there is a worldwide map on the rom though, so i'm hoping that becomes activated when the game launches in america.

if by "friends across the country" you mean trading with people you know, you can do that too. it's like trading in past games. this will require friend codes though (same with battling).

the only way to battle people online is with friend codes. however, in the battletower you can upload a team of 3 (iirc) to represent you. when someone actually battles your team in the battle tower, it's your pokemon and your name, but controlled by CPU.

oh and since i'll have a copy of each game, i can potentially start diamond over until i get female versions of each starter (for breeding). i did this with the ruby starters and there's a good chance i'll do this for DP as well. dunno how much you guys know about breeding, but ditto is a fucking beast ( can breed with any pokemon (except legendaries and a few other exceptions).

oh and i just found further evidence that cross-region trading will be supported. there are dex entries for Japanese, English, French, German, Spanish & Italian. there's even a hiker that will trade you a Finneon for a german magikarp . i have some pokemon originally from english GBA carts but didn't really notice the dex difference. (edit: turns out this multi-language dex feature is limited to only a few pokemon, but i wouldn't say that effects chances of cross-region trading. japanese pearl has more support for english pokemon than japanese GBA games (it displays all the characters instead of a max of like 4 in past japanese pokemon games)

and you havn't mentioned it in the thread, but after you beat the elite4, you'll be able to transfer pokemon from your GBA games to DP. again if you have any questions, i can prolly answer them.

Should I start playing Ruby again to get the kick ass pokemon from there? Or just screw it.

i don't see why not.

edit: you can only transfer from GBA games once you beat elite4, so it's not like you'll be using these for the bulk of the game. would just be good for completing pokedex or if you have some favorites that aren't in DP.

Really? Fuckin awesome! The articles I've read seemed a bit ambiguous about this, but I'm glad I'll have an easy time getting all the starters now
