I think they have to. They can't charge for something that's obviously based on Valve's creation. It has to remain a free fan mod.

Back then, all you needed was Counter-Strike: Source, but it's changed now. All you need is a Steam account with game that uses the Source Engine installed.

i don't get why so many people love that game.
Because you played it about 8 months ago for the first time.

Ten years ago, when the single-player FPS was DOOM clone #40987104, it was pants-shittingly amazing.

In addition to updated visuals across the board (vistas, sprites, particle & explosion effects), there's updated audio too. From what I've seen, they've also reupped/updated the physics engine so that objects and materials deform and shatter "realistically," in tune with what players experienced (and had to deal with, frustratingly sometimes) in HL2 and its derivatives.

HL1, due simply to the limits of graphical abilities of systems at the time, could not rely on hyper-realistic visuals and audio to immerse the player in the game, having instead to rely on other factors and cues, such as keeping BG music to the bare minimum, pacing the game accordingly so that it's not just a swath of Combine and Vortiguant hordes, and the player's interaction with NPCs in the game. Now that this game looks fackin' sweet with hyper-realistic lighting and effects, as well as audio, it will enhance that aspect of the game.

Interestingly enough, Doom 3 did/was the opposite: using OMGOMG visuals and sounds along with retarded enemies and stupidly-predictable action sequences. Compare D3 to this when it comes out, then be quiet.

For me, HL1 was all about survival horror/action. Many times I had the shit scared out of me by this game.

I agree with this. HL was absolutely amazing, the story was compelling and interesting, and the gameplay outstanding. HL2 took the same basic concept and made it look and play hella better.

I loved Doom3, but what's funny is given a choice, I'll spend hours looking for new/compelling HL2 mods to play, versus replaying Doom3.

Now, anyone have any news on the Strider Mountain HL2 mod??

I hate to bump a year old thread, but it would've been even more retarded to start a new one. Just wanted to let folks know:

Quote:
Hello Black Mesa fans!

We come to you once again with an update. It's now the end of 2009, and we know many of you have literally counted the days down until this fateful month. We are floored by the level of support you have given us and are very excited we're so close to reaching our goal.

Unfortunately, to our great disappointment, Black Mesa will not make a 2009 release.

Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that's (hopefully) more easily available to everyone.

Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn't quite make it, we have come very close, and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We'll be sure and update if anything changes. Until then, hang tight, it's coming!

Not that it's really a big deal, since they've been working on the mod since 2004 and it's been "right around the corner" for a few years. But I've been wanting to play through all of the Half-Life games again and was going to start it off with Black Mesa.

Looks like I'll have to dig out Half-Life: Source
