I grabbed my hatchet and machete (though, I haven't really ever used the machete. It was fairly cheap) at Joe's Army Navy Surplus Store in Michigan. I bought no name brand equipment, but they work fairly well. A little dull. I was just chopping some wood the other week. I have to find a way to sharpen it effectively.

Ok after looking more and more I think I'm going to pick up a cold steel one for like 12 bucks, one of those pick axes listed like second and maybe get a kabar kukri later as they seem to be pretty good too despite being made in Taiwan.

Still open to any suggestions. Wont be buying til Monday

altho too expensive for your needs,id buy this if i needed one.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Bark-River-KSF-M...1%7C240%3A1318

those are super high quality with high end high carbon steel.
and Bark River is well respected in the knife forums.ill admit finding another one this cheap may be hard.
stick with the $19-$22 dollar ones for the 1090 or 1095 steel.

edit
http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/st...tarq%3Dmachete
is even cheaper still.

i did find a cheaper source.
http://www.knivesplus.com/ontario-knives-machete.html

after some research wich i enjoy doing with knives,i found out a few things.the Bark River i linked in the post above is just a modified ontario heavy machete.Onterio is still in contract with the us military producing some of thier knives still.they were last time i looked anyhow.
they are cheap and made of the good 1090 HC steel.

You don't have to get fancy with a machete. Find a sturdy, somewhat thick specimen with an edge. Full tang is best. It'll last forever if you take care of it. No beating on rocks or small children.

That is actually a pretty good price for a BRKT.

just took a look at those
looks like it might work for a hatchet in a pinch, but for a machete it looks pointless

yeh it is a good price, but its only about 33% BRKT input.
as stated its a 1095 onterio machete just reprofiled and rehandled.
but to say something about Bark River is i spent a decent lenght of time on forums with Mike Stewert the owner, hes all about high quality and custom knives at great prices.
http://www.knifeforums.com is about the best knife forum i ever seen covering everything knife related.
also many great deals in thier forum "forsale"section.

I am a member at KF, but I only go there for the Scandinavian Forum, and occasionally ML Knives forum. I spend most of my steel time on Bladeforums.

i gotta see about adding some scales to a frame lock i have coming.
i did a search in my gmail account and i have an account there, but it looks like its just one board all jumbled together.
if thats correct it will be a tough place to find things unless you love the search button more than normal.

"edit" nvm i fixed it

One of the things that always pushed me away from KF is the layout and the color. Annoys the hell out of me. Plus I discovered BF first and just stuck with it.

I got my Cold Steel shovel today. Wasn't too sharp out of the box, but after a few runs with my diafold I can almost shave with it. Pretty fun, sturdy little tool
