what to do V. old ammo

a friend of my gf's family has a fair amount of ammo that is something like 20-25 years old, and he asked me what he could do with it to get rid of it

i told him i'd check and for him to not do anything with it yet, but i believe that so long as it's been stored somewhere dry and cool (which it has, as it's been in a closet) and isn't corroded at all, it should be safe to fire
i'd also think that the local police department would be able to take it to dispose of it

so, what are Weapon[M]ay's thoughts?

Dispose of it? Police? NO!!!

Send it to me, I'll take care of it for you.

You put it down range, or continue storing it. Ammo doesn't have an expiration date.

sounds like a few handgun calibers, but some shotgun and rifle rounds as well
i'll talk to him and see what he wants to do with it

Much of the surplus military ammo on the market is of that age as well. Should be OK if it was stored well.

When I bought my m44 I bought a metal case of ammo that I had to use the special can opener thing to get to it and it was all hand tied and shit. It was dated somewhere in the 50s.

Shoot that shit dude!!!

ammo is only temperature sensitive. time will do nothing to it as long as it's not subjected to extreme, repeated temperature shifts. Shoot that shit I've fired 60 year old .38 short colt ammo.

I have a similar situation, some inherited ammo that is in very poor condition. I'd like to get some ideas on how to dispose of it. Tossing it in the dumpster at my apartment complex seems like an irresponsible choice?

Assume whatever criteria has been met that would stop you from shooting it. Rest assured I won't toss anything that I can still shoot.

kinetic bullet puller. Should cost you less than 20 bucks. It will pull the bullet from the casing, dump the powder into a container like an old food can you can burn it off then you can safely recycle the lead and the casings can also be recycled. Any gun store should be able to hook you up with someone who recycles or reloads the empties.
