Not that hard to tell though when a ship starts closing in on you and it's not supposed to. They don't have to be within firing range to tell that.

What if they need help? Until they make a hostile move you can't just go and start shooting them. Don't get me wrong, once they make a hostile move I could care less what happens to them, but you have to give an approaching vessel the benefit of the doubt.

The Toplite (the ball on top of the Mod 2) takes care of that.

Quote:
Additionally, the [Mk 38 Mod 2] incorporates the service-proven Toplite electro-optical fire control system to optimize effective engagement of enemy targets during day, night and in all-weather conditions. Toplite provides 4-axis gimbal stabilization, forward looking infra-red radar with three fields-of-view, a low contrast, low light level color television camera and an eye-safe laser range finder.
Besides, who in their right mind would welcome a random boat coming at them in radio silence off the coast of Somalia? I'd keep them at arm's length (lol pun) until I had established what they needed.

"What evil lurks on-board shady, Somali vessels? The Toplite knows."

Meh, that's getting too big. Like taking a LAV elephant hunting: It'll get her done, but it sort of defeats the purpose. I'm talking about an 80' boat with something in the range of an 8x8x8 canvas-covered frame that collapses to the deck quickly. Maybe even an A-frame shape that opens like a Venus Flytrap. The FLIR is the only bit that needs to peek out of the top.

Of course if you have lots of money to spend on ammunition, a CWIS would make a really big mess out of a small surface vessel.

They should shroud the emplacements with fake layered cakes a la the "stripper in a cake" performance.

"Surprise, motherfuckers!" *BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*

IIRC, you're not allowed to have armed guards on those cargo ships are you? Because that'd stop a lot of the problems straight away.

I don't know too much about maritime legislation, but I believe that in international waters you can do whatever the fuck you want. Upon entering sovereign waters, you'd probably have to lock the heat up though.

And those laws apply to the country that the ship is registered to, correct?

Back to the OP - I was reading an article in Homeland Security magazine or something close to that title and it was talking about private security companies trying to solve the problem, but it has to do with expense vs routes they take vs where they could pick up the soldiers with their gear and where they could drop them off. I guess the countries that they currently use aren't friendly and neither are the countries along the way or something to that effect.
