hey guys

warning: instagrammed pictures

so I've had this '89 cressida for a while, I've done kind of a lot of work to the suspension, but left the motor/trans stock and just drove it

here's the most recent wheel setup on it

but then this happened

$120 later, the car was back at my parent's house about 20 minutes from my apartment. with hindsight being 20/20, I should have seen the transmission explosion coming, and just drove it over there. oh well.

started ripping into it, which by now is pretty routine for us.

took my skidplate off to drain the oil, saw this. hahaha.

ever take that thing off any sweet jumps?

hot shit vintage VDO gauges started showing up for me to make a cluster out of

and then my friend came over with his cherry picker and I could finally get the goddamn 7m out

looks better already

I went over to my parents' last night and test fitted my trans to see how close everything is

trans crossmember should be pretty easy to make, shifter location comes out 4-6" back from stock which is perfect, shouldn't have to sledgehammer the tunnel too far for bellhousing clearance, so yeah, stoked.

also, my friend took the 7M, and then a few days later this came into the scrapyard he works at, so he's trading me it for the 7m bottom end.

I don't think it was the neutral drops that did it, this transmission has been slipping since I bought the car around two years ago.

getting this out of a yard. made sure I got an uncut harness with intact PCM. the idlers on the front of the motors are seized but the fucker actually runs good with no knocks or ticks, I drove it around the yard before I ripped into it haha.

if I had been doing this a year or so ago, 1jz or 2jz would totally be the way to go, but toyota refuses to sell JDM replacement parts in the US anymore (you're not allowed to order a 1JZ -> R154 bellhousing anymore, have to go with a replica or pay out the ass), and putting JZ's into nissans became a thing, so prices on these motors skyrocketed.

used to be able to get a 1JZ+R154 swap for ~2150 shipped to my door. now it's like, $2500 plus freight if you can even find one. you can do NA-T, and I got a few parts to start going that way, but shit adds up quick. JZ's are sweet, that's for damn sure, but the way I see it, they're a luxury. by doing a shitty junkyard special swap, I can get the car to events for less cash, which on a limited budget per two weeks means I can make it to events sooner and get more seat time.

How's it going to work, swapping an FWD motor into an RWD car?

(forgive the , but I'm genuinely curious)

oh and engine is a 3800 series II

first one pictured is an non-turbo, the one I'm getting with the harness and everything is a higher mile L67 supercharged version.

the transmission is from an '07 solstice that got swapped, it has five miles on it. the bellhousing is from a 4cyl dakota, which for some reason has a GM metric pattern.

cool thing about using GM garbage is everything's super common and affordable, especially living in metro detroit.

right now, I'm trying to figure out a driveshaft for the swap. driftmotion sells an adapter flange to go from the mk3 supra diff flange to a "standard 1350 flange", which I think means ford trucks with 1350 u-joints, I just need to figure out what kind of a truck has that shaft, get one, replace the slip yoke with a GM one, and have it shortened and balanced.

well, what's the difference between a FWD motor and a RWD motor?

the motor mounts and accessory routing. if there's something I can't make work with the FWD motor, I can use parts off a camaro. I just got FWD motors because they're cheap and plentiful.

the FWD motors have the throttle body facing backwards, for firewall clearance I need to either make an adapter with a J-bend in it to bring the throttle around and mount if facing forwards, or run a camaro IM. there's talk of having to switch to camaro brackets and accessories if you do that, though, so I'm on the fence about what I'm doing for an IM. it'll be easier to figure out once I actually get the motor, though.

Wow that's going to be a hell of a project. Are you sure it's worth it? Given my skills it would take years.

Sucks that you can't find a decent I6 for cheap. How about M52+turbo?

Hah, I was gonna say... that ain't a damn 'yoda tranny. I'm not the biggest fan of mixing brands, but a friend of mine has warmed me up to it with his mustangs. First a 350 in a '95, then a 6.2 diesel with twin turbos in the same car, and now he's got a 6 cyl cummins in one, with an 8" channel in the floor for the exhaust, lol.
