Generation Kill... is it like that?

I've been watching this HBO show now for a few days. I have to say it's really good, but the entire underlying theme Im getting here is Marines = the US' whipping boys.

Is anyone here a marine that can confirm this? Do they seriously send you out with no batteries, gun lube, wrong color fatigues, and generally shit for equipment?

Doesn't paint a pretty picture for the service even though they all seem to hold on to their morale and push through.

The Marines have historically got the short end of the stick.

Was there an asshole Sgt. Major walking around yelling at you every time he saw you for not shaving your face?

It sure as hell wasn't when I was there last year. Most of the danger then came from IEDs. Couldn't speak to the present situation though. The Iraqis did just take over security in all major cities and to be honest they are pretty fucking incompetent. Imagine a whole country of men that act like adolescent males, then imagine them all with guns, then picture tribal infighting amongst the police and the army and that is probably just about the whole situation now. They're basically doomed and the American military gets to just patrol the countryside and sit back and watch the country deteriorate even further.

Oh and sorry. Yes the Marines did still get shit equipment, but that's because they break everything they touch so I don't know if it was the equipment or them. Overall nothing is really in short supply there anymore, except for occasionally water (bathing not drinking water).

I will completely agree with this statement. I was in Baghdad for 15 months between early '07 and 08

Every service thinks THEY have it the worst. Generation Kill isn't just a story about Marines, it's that way in every service. It's 2009 and I'm in Iraq with BDU chemical suits still, and I have to buy my own batteries for my NVG's... And CLP for my weapons? Yeah, okay... people just use motor oil.

Yeah, the danger from the enemy is mostly gone, but the story is still the same, we're no more better supplied today than we were in the initial invasion.

Our humvees are a little better than they had it though, that's for sure. You won't see me running a convoy in a truck with no doors...

Oh, also, the funniest part of that series is also the most true. The military rumor-mill is a hilarious thing.

Hey, did you hear that j-lo is dead?

the lone chick in the shop was talking about how her and her husband were looking at getting a car for her so they don't have to share, she was talking about wanting something with more than two doors for the baby
i looked at her and said "wait, you're pregnant?"
i've never seen someone say no so fast, it was like an explosion of negation
