I use SUSE myself as my sole OS, and I must say im highly impressed with it. Getting most things to work was a snap. I dont have the time to set everything up manually with the more "advanced" distros but im FAR from a linux newbie
![]() I played around with Gentoo for a while but found it too cumbersome and time consuming for me. I cant spend all day on the computer ![]()

any words of advice for installing linux through VMWare?
CentOS looks interesting and im thinking about putting it on my main desktop through VMWare. I dont want to dual boot it because I dont want any risk at all in fucking up my main windows install. Im going to put Ubuntu 64bit on my laptop as dual boot and see how that works ![]()

Setting up VMWare for Linux is pretty straightforward. After the installation, remember to install the VMware tools. |

Let me just say, Linux has come a long way since I last played with it around 4 years ago. Last time I used it was like I said, about 4 years ago and I was using Mandrake (which I see is now called Mandriva). I just downloaded Kubuntu last night (the KDE version of Ubuntu).
Wow. Installing it was just as easy as installing windows. Now I am not afraid to give it to my father. Hell it even had the drivers for my video card (9600XT), LAN card (which is on board, Nforce2). And this built in spell checker in Konqueror is badass.

I really liked DSL (Damn Small Linux) for my laptop because it only serves 3 functions but I had the same problems someone earlier in the thread said. I couldn't get anything installed correctly if it wasn't an *.rpm
I converted the laptop over to Ubuntu last night but I don't like it. It's extremely easy and nice looking but really slow on this machine. Last edited by DarthWombaT; 10-29-2006 at 06:02 PM.. |
