And just about everybody (except Epic) used the Quake3 engine after it came out, so it counted as a major game distribution platform, too.

Hang on, what's the big story here?

- They're building an x86 console.
- If it ran Windows, they'd have to pay Microsoft for a license. Considering MS makes a game console already... yeah.
- So they're picking a free OS for it. They went with Linux, probably because drivers are already available and there's no major disadvantage to Linux compared to other free OSes such as FreeBSD.

You expected a big story from dio?

How many games on Steam linux anyway? The platform is there, doesn't mean anyone is going to develop for it.

I see what your trying to do there...

but no, the quake 3 engine is NOT a 'game distribution platform', it is a game engine.

To imply that the handful of games made with the quake3 engine was enough to justify a complete shift in pc gaming to linux is absurd.

Steam IS a major game dstribution platform, its support of linux can entice more than just john carmack to make their engine linux compatible.

At least the Quake 3 engine didn't require developers to reimplement for linux - all they had to do was recompile. Not so with Steam.
