The line from the manifold to the canister is supposed to have a VSV in it. At some times, it allows fuel vapor from the canister to pass through, and other times it doesn't. What you have instead is just an open line that always allows air through.

What I suggested is to just plug that whole line, so that it never allows air through, and see if that makes any difference to your problem. If so, you know that you need to put that VSV back in and get the hoses right.

Edit: Also, when hunting for vacuum leaks, soapy water won't help you. A vacuum leak is a spot where air is being sucked IN to the engine, not leaking out. You wouldn't get any bubbles or anything right there. What you CAN use, though, is an unlit propane torch. The propane in that area will provide extra fuel for the engine as it passes through the extraneous hole, making the engine idle faster.

On the Gen 3 there are two lines both coming from the intake mani, one is immediately before the tb one is immediately after, there's a solenoid that I am completely missing which you plug those two lines into, then a separate line goes from that solenoid to the evap can

So the VSV (your "solenoid") has three vacuum ports? I've never seen one with three.

its two separate parts apparently

this "solenoid" that switches between before tb and after tb goes to one, a hose comes off of that then goes to another device that has a single line that goes straight to the can

if I remember what the mechanic told me correctly

I mean its working, I'm not getting fuel stench and they've been capped off like you said before and during the extent of these problems.

How many cranks shouldn't matter as much as the consistency. If they all had the same number of cranks and all read the same thats a good thing.

Also warm should read higher than cold, which it did. That PSI is pretty low for NA, but i guess normal for a turbo motor.

The same guy who insists on 4 cranks for a compression test and put a plug gapped at 0.000" in your motor?

I'd tell him to go fuck himself and find another.

He has $700 worth of my property sitting in his shop, I'm going to have to be a little more delicate than that.

Yeah, $700 of your property that he has a vested interest in charging you $1500 of labor to install.

There are so many good cars in good condition out there, with all OEM parts, without 7 different people trying to fix each others mistakes.

Food for thought. The mr2 is probably a very fun car but jebus christ on a cross made of , this one is a real mystery eh

the situation isn't as dire as you make it out to be, I just need a better mechanic
