Why not get one? They're not terribly expensive, unless you just have to have one of the boutique brands, like Wilson Combat or Ed Brown.

Like $750-$1200, no? I'm a bit strapped for cash.

My friend got a gorgeous SS replica from Taurus i think It feels so nice in your hand.

I know this is going to sound nitpicky, but ALL 1911s that aren't 100 years old are "replicas"

The first 1911 I ever held was made by Singer... the sewing machine company.

I thought if someone would say this as I posted

Yea idk how many period 1911s are for sale. Was singer the only maker at the time? I assume the newer ones have improvements.

You can spend that much; I think that's about what I paid for my Kimber.

Ruger sells one in the ~$650 range, I think, and there are several other brands made in the Philippines, and maybe Turkey, that can be had for more like $450. The real expense is the ammo, though. .45ACP is not an inexpensive cartridge to shoot.

Rock Island Armory is the biggest of the budget brands. I got to shoot one, once. I'm at best a mediocre pistol marksman, but the RIA seemed totally acceptable to me, function wise. It just doesn't look quite as cool. That's obviously subjective anyway, though.

Oh lord no! During WWII anyone with a lathe in the garage got a government contract for 1911s Joking aside I think there were at least a half dozen manufacturers of 1911s during WWII alone.

Of course the design has been tweaked over the last 100 years, but even so, I've had a lot of very knowledgeable people say that unless you buy an expensive highly tuned boutique 1911 you shouldn't expect it be 100% reliable with anything other than GI ball ammo, which is what it was originally designed for.

building a gun of your own isn't rocket science, in fact with basic machine skills and a dash of engineering knowledge pretty much any idiot could make a MILSPEC weapon in a year with some practice

or so they tell me

Many of the new models are great, minus some of the colts with silly passive safeties.

If you want one that feels just like the one your Grandfather would've carried go with a Llama or Rock Island Armory.

I had a Springfield Mil-Spec GI. I loved it, sold it when I was strapped for cash. I will own another one day.
