Pushing a Cadillac

So, I'm inheriting a 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham.

Not it, but fairly representative:

My grandmother sold her house in California, and moved everything back to Wisconsin, where she kept the Cadillac. It's a low mile, 5.7L pig iron chevy V8 with TBI mated to a 4L60. I'm sure, on a good day, it makes about 200HP.

What's the hot setup for that sort of thing? Can I bolt up, say, a 5.3L from a truck with a 4L80E and throw a big fat cam at it?

I once had someone tell me that the 5.3 is similar enough to the LS1 that it can be used almost interchangeably. If this is the case, I'd be floored to learn that there's no relatively simple way to install one in a 1990 Cadillac.

That said, I'd be curious as to why you wouldn't want to just leave the car stock. I bet the stock engine matches the character of the chassis pretty well.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, your car shares its platform with the Buick Roadmaster and Impala SS of similar vintage.

As such, I bet most of this thread would apply:

I'd be hoping for a little better mileage and power, mostly.

Also, I will be swapping a La Cucaracha novelty horn in.

Fair enough. I can't help but wonder if you couldn't do something like retrofit newer fuel injection to the stock engine, though. Seems like that might be more likely to involve a plug and play solution, vs. having to fabricate a bunch of stuff like engine mounts and exhaust pipes.

You appear to have a better stomach for project cars than I do, though.

Obviously. No 1990s Caddie is complete without one.

I would totally build what's in there, but TBI is pretty much the end of the road for the iron SBC. I could conceivably build it up to LT1 specs and swap on a TPI manifold and computer (that's really just bank fire, lol), but that gets pretty expensive pretty quickly. I can't take a piss in a junkyard without hitting an LS in a truck that I could pick and pull for about $300.

It will be annoying building adapters for all the things in it (AC, alternator and power steering), but I think it would be more annoying trying to fiddle-fart around with the SBC that people have moved away from.

I guess if you have the ability to fabricate stuff like mounts, that makes sense.

Are used GM v8s seriously that cheap? At that price, I should consider one for my Miata...

It has arrived.

Belowdecks:

It's an L05 350, so about 180HP/250 lb-ft, TBI fuel injection, 13MPG. Does a mean donut.

Smokes at cold start, so the valve guides are probably starting to go.

Haven't decided whether to do one of the ubiquitous top end kits that'd net me > 300HP, or scrap the smog-dog 350 for an "LS ALL THE THINGS" swap. Right now, I've got to make my Infiniti all wheel drive again (destroyed the right front CV axle), so that's more on my mind than the relatively simple stupid SBC.

Unless I had a lot of funds, I think just doing the top end makes sense. Should guarantee a better running car and less things to fix and make compatible with a different motor. It's a cruiser anyway, not a performance car. 300hp is ore than enough

I'm with Zeke on this. Might as well just do the top end. 300HP will make sure that thing can get up a 6% grade without exploding, and you can focus on other car-related priorities.Even if that Cadi had a 400+ LS setup, all it's going to do is roast the tires. It's a heavy-ass car with zero aerodynamics, so it's not going to impress anyone out of the hole or on a roll. Just freshen her up and enjoy it mang
