but.. why the hell would the mig fire so close? It could have taken that guy out from a much further distance and not worried about getting caught on film...

From the story I read, the Mig fired on the drone once before and missed, then it moved in close for a second shot, presumably because the drone's engine didn't generate a big enough heat signature for the missile to lock on to. The first shot is what alerted the drone pilot to turn the camera to pick up the Mig. Just what I read...

That would make sense. Otherwise, the UAV operator would have had no freakin clue where to point his soda straw at.

Anyway you cut it, that is internationally considered Georgian territory.

prometheum, they don't. they had a few SU-25T and about 25 on a contract with russians, but since their relations fell apart, they won't have any more.
I believe they have L-39s too.

they have RAM coatings as well, right?
and even the wing-pylons (for external stores) can be dropped to maintain full stealth characteristics.

RAM coating is only half of what makes it stealth; otherwise we'd just paint every other aircraft with it and make them stealth. it has lots to do with the shape too. to me you might as well put 2 missile rails on each pylon and increase your combat load out if you're gonna throw wing bags on there

Unlikely, but it can jettison not only the tank but also the pylon to regain its stealth.

no no, i understand that. i believe they are still working / testing the external missile rails ... my point being that i read somewhere that even the rails were going to be able to be dropped (i.e. if external stores are used, drop the rails to maintain back to full stealth characteristics).

yes, looks like f-22 will use LAU-128/A rail launchers on the outboard stations.
