ear protection

can someone recommend a pair of ear cover things for the range?
I don't like ear plugs, want the full headphone looking things
nothing fancy, just something simple that is well made and will do the job
thanks

Home Depot. The stuff they carry is usually pretty good.

almost any sporting goods store, hardware store, etc has headphone style ear protection, usually anywhere between $15-30 depending on brand/DB reduction, etc.

first time i went to the range i was going to take my $10 earmuffs i use for work, but my friend told me they supplied ear protection. figured what they had would be better.

turned out they had 20 pairs of exactly the same muff. and they worked just fine. although i have since bought a set of anti-sonic ear plugs. just because i prefer plugs.

Look for a high NRR, something like 31db.

also depending on the gun, look for some with the bottom notched or slim, you don't want the round the big round earmuff style. sometimes they won't fit at all or they look like mine and are all chewed up.

Is it safe to just use simple ear plugs?

sure, for most guns. it's what I use most of the time. just make sure the db rating is as high as you can get. I shop around for 31db NRR plugs. most are 25-28db NRR.

that's about the same rating for most earmuffs. the only better protection is earplugs + earmuffs. the ratings don't add so it only nets you a 5-10db NRR additional. a 28 plug and a 28 earmuff would give you about a 34db NRR.

Just remember not to twitch when the hot wax hits your ear canal or the mold will get deformed
