Adjusting the tach on a 91 Camry

My dear homobots,

I inherited a 91 Camry DX Wagon from my in-laws who left the country; car is in pretty goddamn good shape for being 23 years old with some minor things that need to be taken care of (but purrs like a kitten).

One of the biggest annoyances I've had with it is that the dash includes a speedo, water temp and a gas gauge - THAT'S IT.

I scored a cluster out of an LE which has a tach and is within 80 miles on the odometer reading (a miracle on its own). I slapped it in but after installation I noticed that the tach is reading 500 RPM lower than it should and when it's off, the needle drops below zero for what seems to be exactly a whole tick (i.e. about 500 RPM worth). I can't recall whether it was like this when I got it out of the junkyard or if I did something. If I try to move the needle by hand, it moves fine but hard stops at the 8K mark which is the absolute max on the tach.

So - any ides on how to adjust the tach? And yes - this is the right cluster for the car; I have a 4 cyl and I pulled it out of a 4 cyl.

PLEASE! SOMEONE! HELP MY PLUM OF WRATH!

Does your old gauge cluster just have a blanking plate that says "TOYOTA CAMRY" or something where there should be a tach? I know with MR2 gauge clusters you can actually dismantle them and swap in a new speedo, or a new tach if yours fails (or, in my case, since I have a jap cluster I need to find a TRD speedo so I dont have a 110mph limiter)

Consider swapping the tach into your (working) cluster if it has this modular design that im talking about...

I mean if the problem is literally with the tach then your only option is:

Unfortunately the original cluster is not interchangeable with the new cluster aside from the speedometer/odometer assembly.

Well that was an easy fix - just had to move the needle by hand.

Also - what are the chances of finding the cluster you need with odometer reading only 79 miles apart...!

you could make it an exact match if you find the gear set for the odometer

The gear set is identical - if i wanted to make it match I'd just swap the face plate... but I couldn't care less haha. Actually prefer the faceplate with less numbers.

Can't move it back genius; only forward. Also it's 80 miles apart - how is that exactly "fraud"?

My first car was a Camry of that vintage. An AllTrac model, actually. My dad actually bought it new in '89, it was passed to me at 16, and It had roughly 630,000 kilometres on it when the original battery and alternator went out.

I miss it dearly.

Original battery lasted nearly 400k miles? Bro - if you gonna lie, at least make it believable.

It actually did. Boggled the hell out of us. The mom's had multiple Camrys over the years - all over ~250K km... never had to replace a battery. None that we kept as long as that one, though.

I occasionally browse the classifieds to find a mint-ish 87-91 Camry (preferably a wagon) with the 3SFE and 5MT... haven't found one yet that isn't completely rusted out. Canada and winters FTL.

so sweet and innocent "cant move it back"

the DMV wouldn't give a fuck if it were 10 miles or 10,000 they'd still call it fraud

I still do not understand how A. they'd know and B. they'd care?

Also no - you can't move the odometer back without taking the spindle out which means breaking the housing you goddamn
