building a MAME arcade cabinet. input please.

this adventure is not very far along so no pics of it yet.

but I have ordered the controller parts.

1 x cable kit (553) = 6,50Euro
7 x T-Molding, 18 mm, schwarz (254) = 10,50Euro
6 x Pushbutton SL, (343) = 2,25Euro
1 x P1-4 Start Button Set (435) = 6,49Euro
1 x JLW-TM-8 (Sanwa) (508) = 18,75Euro
1 x I-PAC 2 (127) = 46,45Euro
2 x speaker covers, Metall, 112 mm (209) = 3,30Euro
1 x board holders (90) = 0,95Euro
2 x speaker covers, 129 mm (161) = 2,00Euro

wood for the cabinet i can pick up and morning or afternoon afterwork. Im going to get them to cut it into the right sizes already and just do the shaping, routing and finishing here at home. 18mm MDF is what im planning on using. ive got a ton of screws, glue and tools here already.

ive got some basic plans from the net. Im going for a basic shape classic cabinet like this one>

I want the controls flush with the case and not on a ledge that sticks out 4 feet in all directions.

as for the paint job. I wanted to go for a classic spaceinvaders design, but my wife thinks it might be too scary for our younger kids.

So I might go for a pacman design, but i dont like the original one with the blobby looking pacman and ghost and Ive seen that trying to create your own multi carachter paintjob can look really shit if you do it wrong. so..... any ideas people?

hardware is going to be an old P4 with 1500mb memory, huge harddisk and a GF4 is already in there, as is a wifi and 5-1 soundcard. monitor is going to be a portrait 19" LCD. i cant use a real arcade monitor becasue i find them too expensive and wiring them looks dangerous. im a real death magnet when it comes to electricity. so i always give it a wide berth.

what am i missing? what do i need to know?

1. I need a marquee right? without it its going to look gay or not?
2. paint job for the cabinet. classic arcade, non-scary, maybe just an atari logo? input please.
3. glass or plexi over the monitor? yeah or no? Im edging towards yeah.
4. creative cambridge 5-1 speakers have got to be enough right?
5. will i need a wireless keyboard and mouse? how often will i need to get to windows? surely i can just mstsc into it for the odd bit of maintenance right?
6. coin door? can i live without it? can i make a fake one? real ones on ebay are quite expensive.
7. you can all come to my house and play whenever you want.

Keyboard and mouse are a must, even if it's just kept inside the cabinet... but I wouldn't worry about wireless as you won't need it all that much

almost any speaker set up should be fine... it's not like most mame games have a very advanced soundtrack...

Coin doors are a personal preference, and give it a more authentic look and feel... but a simple Insert Coin button works as well...

Again on the marquee, personal preference... I'd put a lighted one up there, just to give it a more authentic feel.

I wouldn't bother putting plexi over a CRT, but if you are using an LCD, it adds some protection to it...

I want to do this eventually, but by the time I do it N64 will probably be nostalgic.

It looks like you are going for a single player 6 button setup? You mention "younger kids"... Why would you not go for a 2 player setup? My cabinet is setup as a 4 player cabinet and my kids are always on it. My son started playing my cabinet when he was 3 years old and he still hasn't gotten bored with it yet.

1. I need a marquee right? without it its going to look gay or not?
It is not necessary, but you can pick up a fluorescent bar from a hardware store pretty cheaply. It just gives it that arcade look.
2. paint job for the cabinet. classic arcade, non-scary, maybe just an atari logo? input please.
Not knowing your children, I would just go with something simple. I don't think that the Space Invader would scar anyone for life though. I say do what you want now, so you don't have to re-do it at a later time like I am...
3. glass or plexi over the monitor? yeah or no? Im edging towards yeah.
You said you had kids... I think this is a must unless you want to have to clean the screen all the time. Cleaning plexi or glass is much better than having to clean the actual screen. As far as plexi vs. glass... I went with plexi the first time around and it is now scratched all to hell. I am having tempered smoked glass done. The tinted glass just really brings out the colors on the screen better and also hides the bezel.
4. creative cambridge 5-1 speakers have got to be enough right?
5.1 on an arcade cab is probably overkill... Not a single game will take advantage of the extra speakers as most are either mono or stereo. I use a Creative 2.1 system and have the sub mounted inside the cabinet and it sounds good.
5. will i need a wireless keyboard and mouse? how often will i need to get to windows? surely i can just mstsc into it for the odd bit of maintenance right?
While VPN or RDS sounds good for maintenance on the cabinet, I've found it pretty cumbersome. I have a USB keyboard tucked away inside the cabinet. Most of the time I need to config anything it is just much easier to do it at the cabinet.
6. coin door? can i live without it? can i make a fake one? real ones on ebay are quite expensive.
I spent about $140 for a 4 player coin door and added in token mechs. In about 4 years I've used the coin door 2 or 3 times... It just gives it that arcade look. If you want the look, but don't want to spend money on a real one check out this. I've heard that it looks good from a distance.
7. you can all come to my house and play whenever you want.
Thanks for the offer, but... Here's my cabinet. My build thread should still be somewhere on these forums.

Also, BYOAC should become your bible throughout the build process. If you need any kind of assistance that is the place to go. When you get around to looking for a front end; might I suggest HyperSpin. I am one of the admins on the HyperSpin project and I must say that it is becoming one of the best arcade frontends out.

I too am building said Cabinet....

but I'm going to basically copy this guy...

http://chris.polymathic.net/cabinet/index.shtml

The software i'm using is a MameWAH front end running, MAME, Sega Master System, Sega Megadrive, Sega MegaCD, Sega 32X, Sega Gamegear, NES, SNES, N64, Gameboy, NeoGeo Pocket, Atari 2600, Atari Lynx, PSone, Daphne (for Dragons Lair & Space Ace Laserdic Games), TurboGfx, Jukebox, plus I've designed the MameWAH interface to run Guitar Hero, with the wired guitar via USB.. Can't wait to finish it.. PM me we can swap ideas.

Edit: Kudos to 'Dazz' for this.. http://dazz.genmaygamers.com/ it look awesome

MameWAH is OK. I used it for a long time before I switched over to Maximus Arcade. I found that my configs for MameWAH kept getting screwed up after a couple hours of play. I would have to take an hour or so and completely re-do my configs. Eventually I just started copying over backedup configs, but it kept happening too often. I switched to Maximus Arcade and it was an excellent front end. Very easy to configure and easy enough for a 4 year old to navigate, save his own favorite lists, and play games.

Now, I have been working on the HyperSpin project... This is a new front end that is much much much more graphically appealing and arcade like than any other out there. It is still in its infancy, so there are many new features coming along with a very nice configuration application. Before you get to far into configuring MameWAH I suggest checking out HyperSpin or even Maximus Arcade.

Definitely check Groovy Game Gear. They have a ton of stuff and the forums are full of info on how to use it. Their prices are pretty decent too. I've never built a cabinet but I used one of the 32 channel controllers for an LED lighting setup.

I am a dumb fag who needs a dumb TV show to tell me something thatís common knowledge. Then I make

when I was cool, back in high school my friend and I built our mame boxes.

This was before it became mainstream and you could easily get plans.

There was months of preparation, measuring boxes, etc... at arcades. Soldering experiments, control layouts, etc...

The woman in our lives didn't appreciate our hard work or mess (they were are mothers)

But the end product turned out quite well. I will post pictures later.

You need a marquee. Buy some plexiglass, then print out your marquee on paper and place it behind the glass with a cheap florecent tube. It will come out authentic and you can change it at will.

Coin door is not needed, use a button now, you can always upgrade later.

Keyboard and mouse was a must, but these days virtual desktops are pretty slick and you could probably use that instead. Especially if you have a laptop or desktop near by. We built our keyboard tray to slide out from under the controls. You couldn't see it unless you pulled it out, and then you had full functionality.

Also, many of the front ends these days are slick aswell, so you only need the keyboard and mouse for rebooting BSODs, etc...

my gear came today.

the white buttons are player 1,2,3 and 4 buttons (printed logo). it was actually cheaper to buy all 4 than just player 1 and player 2.....silly germans.... the roll of black stuff is 7 metres (+/- 21ft) of t-molding. and i went for the rainbow coloured buttons because>

a: im going for a happy, cheerful cabinet
and
b: im a huge homo.

and believe it or not, i actually managed to find my crimpers (AND the terminal ends!!!!) and old PC fan guards that i squirreled away years ago. fucking amazing feat for me!!!

thank you all very much for the replies.

dazz. I actually see your cabinet while scouring goole for plans. while yours look absoultely excellent, im going for a more classic style cab. glass is actually a better idea than plexi, i didnt consider the thousands of scratches its going to get (even without the kids hammering on it, even cleaning clothes eventually push enough dust and crap around to scratch it). I think im actually going to try to route a fake coin door from wood and RVS. thanks for the links.

thanks to crazymike and you others for the input. I think i am going to try a marquee. i dont want to end up regretting not printing a nice design and cutting a bit of plexi.

still havent decided on a front end. ill check out all your suggestions.

I have to go to the DIY shop this weekend for supplies for a couple of other jobs i have to do around the house before i can start to build my mame cabinet. but im going to buy the wood i need then anyway, maybe try to sneak a few hours on it here and there.

http://revision3.com/systm/page/all/#episodes

Systm had some mame episodes from last year that will help you out. it went over 3-4 episodes. Go down to episode 24.

Hyperspin, while cool, is better if you can design your own skin for games, as personally I haven't found a ton of premade skins for anything other than the popular games, like pac-man and mappy. That may not be a big problem if all you want is a couple of hundred games, but if your goal is the entire collection its going to suck to do 3000 skins to make it look right.
