"How was your day?" = What???

(Insert mandatory preface about you all know my situation with the girl I am persuing, Checkmate, Arghhh- Giving Up threads, etc...)

So back when me and this girl were first getting to know each other, we used to talk a lot on Yahoo Messanger. Almost every night.

She would always contact me first with a "Hey" message.

I'd say hey back, and follow it with a "So how was your day?"

And I was truly interested. I wasn't just asking to make conversation. I really care about this girl and I wanted to know how her day was.

Inevitably she would give me an answer like "It was OK." or "Nothing special."

And she still does this. Even in person, she just will not talk about her day. It's like she just doesn't care or something...

What is up with that? I thought every girl wants a guy to ask "How was your day?" and really mean it.....

Perhaps you should change your question to "did you do anything exciting today" followed by "what did your day look like?" Your question is too easily answered with "Okay" or some other quick answer. I wouldn't be worried if she doesn't spend the 5 minutes to fully describe her day and get carpal tunnel. What concerns me more is that so many people today communicate via a keyboard and not via a phone. When you talk with a keyboard, you are just asking for the conversation to be cut down to a minimum.

Maybe you should go right for the "what panties did you wear today?" question
Seriously tho, when I'm done working for the day the last thing I want to do is talk about work. Maybe she's the same way.

So what? I'm a guy and whenever someone asks me, "How was your day?" or "Hey, how are you?" I always say, "Fine." Let's see how you respond: How was your day, sci_mystic?

I can have a conversation with my mom where the only thing I ever say is "Oh." Literally!!

You asked the wrong question. Try something that can't be so easily answered with a "nothing much" or "fine/ok".

Almost any person wants their signifigant other to ask about their day. You're not quite there yet sci.

Talk to her about it, see if she likes chatting about work or school first. She might not like it, and just needs to decompress instead of rehashing... or she probably doesn't understand that you actually want to hear about the boring details of her day.

I have come to the conclusion that it's just that my friends lead very boring lives.

Every now and then she does have something to tell me, if something noteworthy actually did happen. I had a long conversation with her about why she doesn't talk about her day and she basicly said "Because every day is exactly the same. I always tell you when something interesting happens, but that is rare around here."

Now me, on the other hand.... Don't ask me how my day was because 9 times out of ten, I WILL go over all the little boring details, from the infinite drama of killing a spider in the shower in the morning to forgetting where I put the laundry hamper when I'm changing out of my clothes for the night...

But then again, I am an absent-minded "scientist (and I use that term loosely)" who works with a much more absent-minded business partner managing the local ISP, in addition to managing my own personal experiments with Tesla coils, high-voltage, computers, and whatnot. There is always some aggravating or exciting thing that has happened to me during the day that is noteworthy. But I am also one who likes to stop and examine how full life really is, so a little thing can be a big deal for me. It took me two weeks to get over the excitement of having my house recarpeted.
