Breaking up with someone you live with.

I have no problem breaking up with someone. But what I want to know is how do you break up with someone you live with?

It seems harsh but, it just isn't working. We started dating in December of '08 while she was in college. She had to go home for the summer, and I said she could stay with me for the 2 months until she moved back into the dorms. Well when the next semester came she dropped out of college due to financial reasons and just ended up staying with me.

Her family lives 9 hours away. And she'd likely go there. But I'd probably have to end up driving her there.

Edit: Her family is 9 hours away. Not 9 miles.

yup, this exactly
there's no magic easy way to do something like this
its gonna be awkward
its gonna be uncomfortable
its gonna be unenjoyable
so just be straightforward and honest to get it over with quickly and firmly

Exactly. Why would you drive her back? She can have her family come get her.

You owe her atleast 30 days, but it would be cool of you to give her 2 months to arrange and save money. I know people who have broke up and lived together a few weeks will the other prepared for a move.

This. She'll probably want to move out right away though.

yeah man. dont be a inconsiderate dick. if its just not working out talk to her and give her time to get out of there, save money, etc. you didnt mention she did anything wrong like cheat or treat you bad or anything like that. so sit her down, talk to her, and set up a plan so that she can do it. she may just take off but at least you acted like a man and showed some respect to her. youll feel better about the whole thing if you do it with respect, and it will help her as well in the long run.

The awkwardness of the 9 hour drive would be ridiculous in my mind. I'd still try to be standup, but in a way where you don't have to spend 9 hours in the same car with her after you've made this decision to split. Take the gas money you'd spend on 18 hour son the road and try to help with moving/packing supplies, and I'm sure her parents will help her get her stuff.

THIS. I've done it before, and its tough.

Quick and firm, like removing a bandaid, it will be better for you both.

I wouldnt expect to stay friends through
