Help me with lawn care: Grass

I bought a house recently, and its starting to warm up so things are starting to grow. Alot of weeds mostly. I have a large back yard with one live oak tree (HUUUGE), and a lemon tree (small), 2 pine trees, and ALOT of wide open area in direct sunlight. I'm having an issue with the grass appearing to be half dead in alot of places, its sort of wilted and yellowed out. Also I have huge patches of clovers that grow very quickly while the grass grows very slow. Any tips on killing the clovers while not killing grass? Also how do i get a thicker, more green grass to grow? Will I have to kill everything and start the lawn from scratch? Or can I just get some grass seeds and spread them out?

This is the old version of the book, but you can check it out on google fo free

Pretty much all you need to know about grass is in that book.
It's written by a prof of mine and dude knows what he is talking about

There are alot of variables you're leaving out so... I'm not sure how to answer...

you can re-sod it, or just try to spread some grass seed down to fill in the dead spots. Oak leaves are very acidic which will make the soil's ph too low for grass to grow where huge piles of leaves have been for a long time. Weed & Feed will get rid of your clovers and such without killing your grass, but be careful how you use it becuase too much will actually kill the grass. If you're going to be taking care of the grass yourself, pick up a cheap Scotts spreader so you evenly distribute the weed & feed, grass seed, or whatever.

I have the same problem, and yah it seems you have to start from scratch. What I decided is... fuck it. I'll resod when I'm ready to sell the house and I can have a yard full of weeds until then. Yards are WAYYYY too much work and/or money to get them to look nice all the time.

Oh and don't believe anyone who says you can weed and feed and it will kill the weeds but not your grass. All it does it make the weeds grow even more. Maybe once they are not there in the first place it would keep them out, but by the time you have them its too late.

It's cheaper to buy like... a handful of something cheap that will crowd out weeds and be cheap on maintenence
like st augustine
just depends where you live, how much rain you get, climate, sunlight, wind, and a variety of different factors that can tell you whether you need to spend little or a lot to get new grass

A good looking yard has two main things in it.. time and money. Money can be saved and used towards it, but if you don't have the time to maintain it, or pay someone to maintain it for you.. then you will ultimately be just pissing your money away.

If you have plenty of both, I would just kill it all and then start over (be it with sod, or seed or whatever you want to do. Sod is simply instant grass, but it will need to be looked after and watered and babied for some time after you lay it.. seeding can become a pain in the ass, but you can always pay someone to hydroseed it and up your chances of sucess)

I would start with the patches of clover.. if you can stand to do it, just go buy some straight weed killer (not no "oh it's safe fir grass" ) and sock it to it. Kill it, then after how ever long it takes for the chemical to become dormant (totally depending on what you buy some may not even contaminate the soil [I know I have used roundup in gardens before and never had any major crop disasters or anything I could totally blame on the roundup] , but then there are herbicides like Crossbow that IIRC stay in the soil and will kill anything for like 7 months or something slong those lines)

Then simply till, reseed, drag in, spread your straw then water.

You could also take and spot spray the whole yard, then go rent a plugger areiater and attempt to over seed the whole yard.. We have done this a few times, but results were mixed..but after repeating a couple times the problem yards turned out fine.

Either way you go.. once you get the weeds under control, you should start using the Pre-emergence variety of herbicides.. they will help keep weeds out of the yard before they grow.

But like I said.. it's all depending on how much time or money you have.

BTW where are you located?

So i have a somewhat open backyard (30x30ish say?) with two trees equidistant from each other and the sides in the middle. Fuck grass, what's a good alternative, a garden with paths etc?

Don't try with some insecticides, it is better to trim the entire lawn and bring it back with good lawn care.

It gets pretty hot here during the summer, 100+, id rather go with native socal vegetation that doesnt require alot of water than try to keep some grass the doesnt belong here growing and free of weeds. Lawns are .
