The Halo novel The Fall of Reach tells the story of how the Spartans came to be, along with the captain of the pillar of autumn from Halo 1. MC's codename during Spartan training was "John 117" since he was #117 of the ~150 Spartans in the first (and last) class.

isn't MC a spartan II? and according to the article, everyone except michelangelo is a spartan III. i know little of halo lore, but this seems like a contradiction.

From what I remember, it's been years since I read the first book, MC was in the first class. I'm sure of that, since the doctor in charge of the whole program picked him up when he was a kid, along with the Pillar captain (who was an LT at the time). They selected these kids who showed promise in several criteria.

Of the 150 in that class, 75 or so actually survived (as in, still medically alive) after all the supersoldier shit they did to them: ceramic carbide grafted to their skeleton, xbox-hueg muscle mass, lightning quick reflexes, etc. The book really goes into detail (fictional, but still cool to read) about what happened immediately afterwards. Of those 75, only like half could still walk and talk: many were essentially husks of their former selves-remember that they're like 15 years old at this point, after starting training when they were 6 or 7 yrs old. MC survives of course and is considered the best since the experiments had the best effects on him-he's described as over 6 ft tall at age 16 and has incredible physical strength and endurance.

The interesting thing is that the spartan soldier program was only half the story: they needed to have all this bioaugmentation to actually use the MJOLNIR armor. There were parts in the book that described when some joe schmoe marine was tested to use it, and just moving his arm when wearing the suit caused his entire arm bones to shatter. The spartans didnt move the suit: the suit moved them, responding to their brainwaves faster than anything could. Because of this, their entire bodies needed to be reinforced.

I could be wrong about the classes. I know that the fall of reach ends with the Pilllar of autumn going through a warp gate or w/e and coming straight into view of the first Halo.

Not even sure why most of the spartans in the picture have different looking armors. Lore-wise they pretty much looked alike and they can tell 'who's who' from the way they move.

And the difference between Spartan 1's, 2's, and 3's:
Spartan I's were soldiers that were never augmented and still had a life of some sort outside of the military. They thought that the Spartan II program were making a bunch of freak of nature super soldiers.

Spartan II's were the kids that were kidnapped and "conscripted" to fight against rebels and insurrectionalists. Their replacement was a flash clone of them that died shortly after - so no one would question the kidnappings. It is one of the most expensive programs that ONI has invested in it and the cost is comparable to building a fleet of battleships. They were trained on planet Reach - which was the largest military base UNSC controls that is not Earth.

Spartan III's program was a expansion of the previous one except the augmentation that requires a certain genetic pattern was broadened and therefore they would never be as fast or strong as Spartan II's. They took volunteers of orphan children whose home planet was glassed. The armor that they were are no where near MJOLNIR's armor and have no shielding at all. Instead they have armor that changes its color/light gets absorbed and reflected to make them nearly invisible like a chameleon. The cost of this program was a fraction of what it took for the Spartan II program and churned out 300 soldiers every few years. These guys are sent to high-risk missions are are generally treated as suicide soldiers to stall the Covenant advance into UNSC space. They take their training from a Lt. Ambrose who is a kidnapped spartan II soldier on planet Onyx.

Cosmetic differentiation for the sake of quickly recognizing which squadmate is which in the game, I'm sure.

I tried to play it. I got about 2 hours in and was super bored. One of the best FPS ever ok! To each his own I guess but again it was nothing special. I guess I am jaded or something.
