For years now they've been referring to anything with slightly more ground clearance than a sedan and a transfer case to power all 4 wheels occasionally as a "4X4"...and usually mention off-roading as well.

no, of course not. I was simply agreeing with joemama that such vehicles shouldn't be called offroaders in the first place. the exception is the land rover but not when it's fitted with low profile run flats.

Well they CAN go off pavement and survive... it's an AWD SUV, not a rock crawler. If people see merit in buying an AWD wagon from Subaru, this is basically the same thing plus a tiny bit of ground clearance.

Camping or simply bad weather it will work better than a regular car. Very, very few people need something as brutal as a Rubicon.
