Website hosting.

looking to set up a website..I will need a domain..

What would be the best way to go? Godaddy.com + a host? Or is there a Good reliable, not expensive host that can also supply domains?

Pretty much all hosts will register you a domain.

Check out Bluehost and Dreamhost, those are both pretty solid and reliable. DreamHost has a special for Wordpress customers (go through the Wordpress page to get it) that's something like $6.95/month for 1TB of storage and 10TB of traffic/month if you pre-pay for a few years.

I'd definitely register a domain independent of your host.

I've used http://www.moose.cc/hosting forever and never had a problem.

Dreamhost, Bluehost, HostGator, etc. all offer you the world, but in reality deliver on very little.

What do you guys think about Godaddy + made2own?

pretty much $17.15 for the first month, then $7.50 monthly...

fuck godaddy

use namecheap instead, 1st year comes with domain registrant protection, so your information is anonymous to spam harvesters/telemarketing bots...After that it's a few bucks a year.

I second http://www.namecheap.com

I've used them for years with tons of domains and don't have anything bad to say. Godaddy will spam the shit out of you IRL or HTTP, then sell your info to everyone.

been using namecheap for years. it's worked well.

I've been using hostgator for about 6 months now and it works well. uses cpanel, which is what I love. Doesn't go down, but I don't stress it so I don't know how it handles stress.

I know that made2own is a member on here, the owner. It's made for some interesting drama, but few and far between, so I get the impression he's pretty reliable.

I host a few websites on a VPS I own* at liquidweb. I went with them for a couple of reasons:
Big websites have hosted there successfully, and they just opened up a new data center in Lansing, MI. I'm from MI and the economy there sucks. They created a few hundred jobs in my home state.

I've registered several domains and host through 1&1 with nary a complaint.

Have also used Dreamhost in the past and their customer service is top notch and oddly witty and wry in their email correspondence and newsletters.

I'm monitoring this thread for the purposes of hosting a series of monetized blogs in the near future.

This for ease of use. Chances are if they're reliable, you won't lose your domain. Independent registrars are great (and if you're lucky like me, your host's domain registration is outsourced to an independent, so you get the ease of use and safety!) but there's no reason to complicate things if you're not a veteran.

I've heard glorius things about ASmallOrange, in my findings they've never been given really bad reviews (webhostingtalk is where I personally go for reviews, because, well, that's the point of their forum.)

I don't personally own an account with ASO, but if I were looking for a hoster, I'd go with them.

Good luck.
