Interesting, M4 slower than E36 M around a track

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1043909

In the same hands on the same day. His weight and power is about the same as mine.

Clickbait. He must be one hell of a driver, based upon how he held against other operators and track records.

E36 M3: 248 rwhp (S52), 3154 total weight w/ driver = 12.7 w/p ratio
Hankook Z214 C71 245/35/18, GC full race suspension, EBC yellow, stock rotors, half cage, Full containment OMP race seat, brake and oil coolers

F82 M4: 415 rwhp (S55), 3761 total weight w/ driver = 9.1 w/p ratio
Toyo R888 265/30/19 & 295/30/19, Carbotech XP 12/10

The E36 is race car, he put tires and brake pads on the F80.... no shit the lighter, heavily modified E36 is faster around the track than the heavier albeit substantially more-powerful car. Historically tracks have always favored better braking and handling to power and while two seconds is massive on track, it is a small gap when you consider one car is a race-capable street car and the other is a street-capable race car. The owner sums it up perfectly at the end of his tale, "In summary, this car is absolutely amazing! Only 1 second behind my E36 and 2-3 seconds behind course record holders is simply jawdropping for any mostly stock car."

lol is this basically your way of saying "the E36 M3 is at least as good as the brand new M4"? Come on, now

So e36 has suspension and ebc yellows = ZOMGRACEPOREPPED

The tires are the only thing that he's got that I don't. I run the exact same pads and rotors as a DD, and we most likely have the same bolt ons and tune.. So does just about everyone else who has an e36 M.

The fact is it's still an excellent chassis even 20 years later.

Agreed, hence why I still sort of want one. I love my car and it is a blast to drive on the street but the 90's cars were still analog and simple. You could beat the shit out of them at the track on Sunday, not feel bad about it and know you were still getting to work on Monday morning without a problem. That is why my 240sx was the most enjoyable car I ever owned even though it was far from being the best.

It's my way of saying n2b

other than tires that's all pretty standard and expected stuff for E36, idk why it being faster seems "obvious" to dopefish - the M4 is much faster in a straight line. I'd have thought it takes more than the same bolt-ons mine has to hang with the new gen at the track.

so yeah n2b

Fun is a slippery thing isn't it.

As an aside, I'm seriously predicting a full electric revolution in the next 5 years though, we're all going to be telling our kids about "exhaust noise" and why it was considered a good thing

Power makes you go fast in a straight line, but brakes have to slow you back down and the suspension and tires get your ass through the corner. Reduced weight helps all of these elements work better. The M4 is awesome, blisteringly fast and a superb handler for the sheer size, weight and unfortunate fate of being birthed in a year of harsh emissions, fuel economy and safety requirements. The E36 was spared so much of that guff and got to exist as a much better sports sedan than the people of the era gave it credit for, simply because the Euro's got a better iteration.

Yea the bloating is like death and taxes apparently

M235 is an interesting vehicle - still kind of heavy though, and only about as quick as an e46 M with similar dimensions:

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...t-drive-review

There's an M2 coming also. In general i think/hope this is all going to go into reverse with more and more microcars, probably electrics, coming out in the near future. At that rate performance will be easy, just plop a giant electric motor in there, and give up the back seat for batteries. Weight distribution, center of gravity, and power band - all those things will become ridiculously easy with electrics.

Don't kid yourself, his car has a LOT more stuff done to it to drop lap times. It's stripped out, caged, has coil overs, r-compound tires and all that jazz. Granted, it's not a bad car, but you're being a little optimistic about your car.

That E36 has an impressive power #, but can lose even more weight imo. Not full race prep.
E36's w/ chip, exhaust, silicone intake + 3.5, headers are around 225-235 RWHP, so he had something extra.

THAT SAID, it isn't a stock car. it's well track prepped and dialed in on the important things (suspension/brakes). My point is that there is items left on the table.

'70s cars were analog and simple. '90s cars are the 386s to todays Core i7s.
