"Stripped out" - he gives the weight and it's the same as the factory car minus the driver, perhaps due to cage being added... Mine weighs the same i already mentioned that.

"coilovers" - he runs the ground control w/ koni adjustables, i have eibach springs with koni adjustables. idk what spring rate he has, or what sways, he didn't mention sways

r-comps I can buy and keep a spare set on some K1s for track days, if i start doing track

My point is that there is items left on the table.

Bingo. It's far from "full race prep" - it's got all the mods you'd expect plus a half cage and r-comps.

E36 can be 2800# or lower, although he does say "with driver" - I doubt he's 350 lbs.

Over a more testing track double that length, it would be pure humiliation. M4 walks away.I would love to more numbers.

I have no clue what that track is like, but i would think on a big one with a lot of straights you're right.

Yes, the 70's were the best era in cars, ever, what is wrong with me to consider any other decade than that of the Malaise Era?

No, the '70s were pretty shit, but the cars *were* simple.

edit: let me elaborate. The '90s are the moral equivalent of the bad old days in computers when you had to manually assign IRQ lines. Because nobody designing EFI systems had ever heard of TDMA or CDMA, or possibly even any kind of shared data bus, you had an ECU with about a thousand tiny signal wires running through heat cycles every time you drove the car. Then CAN came along, and you didn't have to have a thousand signal wires, you had one data bus shared between all the sensors and the ECU. Give me a CAN bus any day of the week. In terms of reliability, availability, and maintainability, a CAN-equipped car beats the old K-jet clones (like Nissan's ECCS) any day of the week.

MPFI on most brands is/was pretty decent but there were adoption issues with some tech like the chevy "optispark" hall effect system on the corvettes/LT1 being susceptible to moisture and such

It's a bit of both. They really were much simpler than today's cars, but already very functional and sophisticated compared to the muscle cars or the early stages of EFI in 70s/80s so i see why he thinks that some 90s cars were in a sweet spot of functionality and simplicity.

So wait, BMW's latest and greatest M4 on crappyish Dot-R tires is slower than the worst M3 so far on Dot-Rs and with suspension work? LOL.

If you can look at the USDM E36 M3 against the Euro one without laughing you've got problems.

If Europe had been given the exact same car that the US was, then it *wouldn't* be the worst ever?

Enh... ok, I'll actually give a decent response, though I'm not a BMW guy. But you bill these things as the ultimate driving machine and you should take it seriously. E30 had the S14, basically a productionized version of the M12/7 Formula 2 mill. The E34 M5 was running the S38, derived from the M88 from the M1 supercar, and the M88 itself was a productionized version of a racing motor. The E46 was running the S54 which should need no introduction and the E92 had the S65, an evolution of the M3 GTRs purpose built race engine. The S85 V10 from the E-whatever M5/M6 belongs in the same sentence too. And then you have the S52 from the E36 M3 which has... what, a different crank and cams compared to the normal version? They really phoned it in.

I'm not touching on the rest of the cars; I am not educated on BMW stuff enough to give details or... well, care.
